Autosteer and Adaptive Cruise Control

I know they don't want to develop this technology but if they included the hardware so the car could do it when using 3rd party hardware like Comma AI.

Not sure how a company could easily / inexpensively "prep" a vehicle for deeply-engineered and integrated systems like this. It's far more than just a wiring harness. Adaptive cruise control maybe not so hard but auto-steer is pretty complex.

And I'm not sure how regulatory rule would apply here - I can only assume there's a litany of standard requirements that need to be met to have these systems as part of a production vehicle.

Isn't auto braking going to be required in the near future? Would assume that'd make adaptive cruise control an easy add.

Auto steer required far more mechanical bits and software. Plus I keep coming back to this not being a road tripping machine.

Yeah, I guess they got to draw the line somewhere. My Nissan Leaf with 150 mile range, also not a good road tripping car, has adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist. Both features are really appreciated commuting in Atlanta traffic.

I find lane assist very annoying in our Subaru; yes it can be disabled but not without an idiot light appearing. Happy to see Slate ignore it.

I’d love to see adaptive cruise as a factory option or accessory. Couldn’t care less about lane keeping.

We just got rid of a newer Subaru Forester and we hated that lane keeping assist. Felt like a pin ball machine and you were bouncing off the walls which are the painted lines.

Much more smooth and enjoyable in our new Volvo

Yup. I have a Tesla Model 3 with FSD. It doesn't have a 5 foot pick-up bed on it which is the appeal of the Slate. Not willing to pay $70k for a Cybertruck.

Yes, Comma.ai. Fits well with the truck's conceptual model. Cheap, works well, not something Slate has to worry about or maintain.

First I’m hearing of this.. how cool?! Seems low-cost to add support for Slate. Fits right into their model of improving on your own!

One answer. Liability. No lawyer would let Slate add the hardware and a 3rd party developer do the SW integration.

Just leave the Slate be. Gray plastic with a BYOD interface.

I’m sure this legal barrier cannot be that serious, considering this product is already available to consumers….
