Ford Motors is announcing a new front-wheel-drive version of the '26 Maverick XL trim with the EcoBoost turbocharged engine; previously, this trim was not available.

This lower-contented version is looking to challenge the Slate's target price in the "mid 20's" ... by dropping the starting price of the Maverick by $1,000.

Drove my sister’s Model Y today and can confirm- an electric vehicle driving dynamics untangled from all the nonsense tech is my ideal vehicle. My Lightning was great but my entry level XLT was far too much money. I hope Ford gets their ā€œModel T momentā€ but their current one is plagued with recalls, premature mechanical failures and poor service/support from an antiquated dealer network.

The one thing about the Maverick over the last three years I've owned mine is the price growth over and above inflation. And that growth was mostly pre-tariff. I'm sure there are lots of reasons, but I suspect a good bit of it is Ford trying to find out what the market will bear.

Example, I paid $30,500 out the door for my September 2022 loaded ICE XLT AWD LUX - loaded. And I got $1,500 in incentives atop that (zero percent interest and a veteran rebate). Today that same vehicle (I priced one just now) is $37,500. That's $4,200 above the BLS inflation calculator. And that's with no incentives. So it's essentially grown $6,000+ above inflation. In fairness, they did improve the infotainment, screen, and a better ICE engine for the 2025 MY.

Seems like Ford is slowly trying to find out what the market will bear. And that there is more and more space at the bottom of the market for companies like Slate. Or Ford, for that matter.

Remember when quoting Ford prices that there is another $2,000 above MSRP when you add the mandatory delivery and acquisition fees.

I don't buy any narrative that Ford is dropping Maverick prices to compete with Slate. Partly because there are no Slates to compete with. There are only "trust us" promises that there will be a Slate. And not for two years (in meaningful volume). There isn't even a production line yet. Just an empty printing plant that's only now starting to be gutted.

I also don't buy the narrative that Ford feels threatened by the Slate. Ford feels threatened by lean and mean Chinese OEMs. And has said so consistently.

So much misinformation in these comments regarding the Maverick.
I've had mine over three years, ZERO ISSUES , 100% reliable! In regards to recalls, I have had three software updates and 12v battery replacement . Totally no big deal, and service at dealer was first-rate.
Also, the ICE engines are basically unchanged since launch, except for minor revisions to air intake system.

And Slate has yet to announce their delivery and fee schedule for regional centers or home delivery. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s $1500 -$2000 additional.
