Based on the filed VIN paperwork viewable from the DOT here: https://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/mid/home/displayfile/4029e499-cd32-4846-99e0-7bfdff42a9ee

To find this info yourself, go to https://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/mid, put "Slate Auto" into the Name field, uncheck "Part 566" but leave "Part 565" checked, click search, you'll see a single result. Click the "ORG24835" link on the left side and it's the above URL to that PDF.

Your VIN will be generated based on the initial shell option you pick, and that will decide which type of vehicle you'll need to register in in some states.

That's for the 2026 VIN of course. I keep checking to see if they have submitted their 2027 VIN system yet. Still no.

Questions about updated VIN...

• Will they keep with the 2T, 2S, 2C models or will that be updated?
• Will the VIN have 2S if you order one of the SUV kits with the vehicle?
• What if you add the SUV kit to a 2T vehicle later? Certainly, you don't get a new VIN do you?
• What will the 135 kW motor's ID letter be?
• Will they use "C" for the 63kWh battery?

My insurance agent said they use the VIN to determine the safety equipment, so it's kind of important that the VIN describes the number of rows and airbags correctly I guess.

The Federal VIN is a permanent number associated with the chassis. The Slate’s will be as it left the factory, uninfluenced by the order of a conversion kit accessory which may or may not be later installed.

State laws vary but many allow modifications to be noted on the title without changing the VIN. There are cases where state assigned VINs can be created (kit cars, etc) but modifications typically don’t justify these and they don’t change the federal VINs if any. I would not expect a truck with a modified title to have the same value as a factory SUV.

I suspect this is one of the reasons Slate shifted primarily to turnkey SUVs which for their life will be less hassle for owners than modified title trucks.. If you’re going to spend $5K-$7K more for an SUV are you really going to convert it back ta much less valuable truck later?

I just looked at custom plate options in Washington State, and this is one of the options. Scary!

Apparently JP Patches was a local children's show from '58 - '81, and the plates benefit Seattle Children's Hospital. So, a good cause, but still... 😂

I have unfortunately not yet seen anyone with one of these tags.

The paper plate stuck to the back window is fine for driving, I'm fine with not paying extra. I've always sort of viewed the paper one as marker "Hey look at me, I'm rolling on new wheels!". (and my wife will be calling me elitist again)

We have no inspections, nor front plates, in MIchigan. The last few years they have released new versions of old plates. First they came out with "Water Wonderland", then "Winter Water Wonderland". The latter was the one I remember from growing up. I'll probably get one of those.

I checked into ordering a vanity plate, but found out they are only six characters. So I couldn't get "Reddy KW" and someone already has RedyKW. So I won't bother with a vanity plate.

(big plans for some Reddy Kilowatt stickers though!)

When I bought my EV6, the 1st of my friends I showed it to said the color looked like dijon mustard, hence her name, Céline Dijon! 😉

FWIW, in Arizona you can include a full space or half-space for
DR SL8

There's a 7-character limit and spaces count, so you could have
GOSL8GO
or (I think)
C SL8 GO
but not
GO SL8 GO
