Preconditioning is a critical feature. It doesn't have to be through the fob, it could be through the app with a wired USB connection to the vehicle, it could be (my preference) through a few button presses on the wheel/instrument panel screen menu, it could be through a 10m range Bluetooth radio connection (though I know some will object) to the app, but it has to be possible. If it's only over a cellular data connection and subscription through the telematics module, that's a catastrophic fail.

If that's the only way possible, I'll buy a telematics module break out my oscilloscope, reverse engineer the communications packets, and build y'all a local module.
I sent a question to Slate to see if the telematics would share the network or if 3rd party would be supported.

I asked too. They told me it’s just a cellular bridge between your slate and smartphone. Also no word on the cost after the free year.

I thought that you plug in the phone to communicate to the truck, and only if you want to bluetooth you need the module?

I hate the subscription idea.

Yes you can plug the phone into the truck to communicate with it by default. No Bluetooth needed. The telematics module is to communicate with the truck from your phone when you’re away from the vehicle through a cellular network. Also not Bluetooth.
