So many posts about, will you still buy if the EV credit

I see a lot of posts about will you still buy if the ev credit goes away.

Here is my take on this.

For the quick answer, No.

Here is why, first off I love the idea behind Slate , so much that I have even applied for a few different positions with the company. However the Slate truck for me is not a necessary vehicle, I am big into modifying and customizing vehicles, I have been looking for a clean mini truck project like a 90s Mazda b2000, Toyota pick up, maybe even a S10 or Ranger.

I am not Pro EV or anti EV, I do not currently own any EVs, however when Slate announced the pick up I was very interested in this platform. I personally think for what you are getting ( as cool as it is to get a very basic truck) that the price with the EV credit is already pushing the max I would spend for this. Now I guess if your plans are to buy this to replace an existing vehicle and use it as a daily driver or use them as fleet trucks then the price with the EV credit is great, considering you get a new truck with a warranty. For me this is just another toy. I can go spend less then half of this on a clean 2wd 90s mini truck, and with the basic mechanics and fuel economy of these old 2wd, 4cyl trucks and the amount of time I would be using it, it would take me decades to spend the money in maintenance, fuel, etc to come close to spending the price of the slate without the EV credit.

So for me, I am hopeful the EV credit holds out long enough to get my reservation. I do not believe that Slate has enough margin to be able to bring the price down close to the price it would be with the EV credit.

Unfortunately, I've heard that the administration is committed to announcing the EV incentive's end this summer. Rumors. Whatever.

If the EV incentive goes away, I would anticipate a meager price drop on the truck to remain competetive. If SA's pricing tactic hinged on the rebate putting their "final" sale price ~20K, and then the rebate is cancelled, they know they need to do what they can to remain in that area to sell in significant numbers.

And for those who don't mind an ICE vehicle, they'll just get a Maverick or similar. And, word is that Toyota is working on a small truck and other makers most likely too.

So much can change in a year and a half.

I am in regardless of whether the tax credit is still in place or not. I really think they expect the truck to be $25k without tax credit. My 2022 Nissan Leaf with 150 mile range was like $26k after the tax credit and I would have so much rather of had a Slate then this boring transportation appliance I am driving now.

Agreed. Actually a bit less than $25K before incentives.

For me, it all depends on the "bottom line" at the time. We don't know at what price point slate is going to come to market with for the base truck, or the add ons that I would want to equip it with. We don't know if there will be a price adjustment if the tax credit goes away or not. There's far too many unknowns to make a concrete decision one way or another at this point. I will say that at a projected price of $20K, I'm interested enough to fork out $50 to have a place in line to make that decision when the time comes. Beyond that, I just have to be patient to see which way the wind is blowing a year and a half from now.

I probably wouldn't buy one if the incentives went away. But, things can change in a year and a half. My finances being a big variable at the time of the Slate launch. If there's still that 200k units sold loophole that gets Slate the credit till the end of 2026... I'd probably jump on it just to secure my spot with the credit. Hopefully they can deliver on that deadline.

Potential double whammy for me as I probably have to factor in delivery costs. So I have done a spreadsheet of my best guesses. Without the incentive I’m about 90% sure to get the blank Slate and be flexible on DYI. With the incentive I’m 100% but will use at least some of that $$ for an upgrade or two, most likely the no seat SUV topper, possibly battery upgrade., but without going over the no incentive price.

I am regardless of the credit the truck really interests me. No other car manufacturer thats sold in the US seems interested in offering an inexpensive vehicle that allows the consumer to actually own the car and do whatever work they want to on them. They took the ownership away from us when you have to have a masters in computer science and an engineering degree in order to change the plugs or replace a gasket. I'm kinda leery of the whole ev venture but im willing to give it a try. So yeah if they make it im gonna buy one

My Lightning purchase was much more contingent on the tax rebate. I felt like that was a disastrous rollout of a fantastic vehicle.
