I have a Bronco and in the Bronco forum there's lots of discussion on whether it is legal to ride with the doors off. In any Ford marketing materials they always have an asterisk and "for off-road use only" disclaimer and it's never pictured on a road with the doors off. I wouldn't expect Slate to ever accept any sort of liability during doorless driving or give a positive affirmation that it's legal. That being said I do it a couple times per year, I see loads of other door less Broncos and Jeeps out there. None of us are getting pulled over. But I don't pretend that the car has retained any safety and I avoid the free ways. So Legal? Maybe. Tolerated? Yes. Safe? Nope. Fun? As long as it's not raining.

In answer to your 4th question my biggest concern is where to lean the doors in the garage so they don't get scratched up.

IIRC the legality of removing the doors is due to the side mirrors (driver's side specifically) being lost on most vehicles. IIRC you need the left mirror and the rearview to be road legal. I know there's kits (which I think I see on MotoGary's Jeep) that would allow you to move the mirrors back and Ford wisely put them on the A pillar. Slate's gonna need something similar.

Edit: One of the Jeep kits:

Here's how I take off the doors and store them so they don't get scratched. After I hang them on the scaffolding, I roll them into my garage and cover them with moving blankets. If you don't have space for that, lots of guys will make a rack to hang them on a garage wall and use various covers to protect them.
