Since it keeps getting repeated that a civic tows 1000 lbs, I tried looking it up, the first manual I found says that particular model is not designed for towing. haven't figured out finding which recent civic models are tow rated for the US.

I haven't seen that. Do you have any links?

Regardless, apparently the towing capacity of a 2022 Honda Civic is 1,750 pounds if the trailer has brakes. That's according to multiple sources, but might not be accurate. 2022 is an 11th-generation, the same generation as now I believe.

Unverified sources are absolute crap and not to be trusted. If you want to know something about a car, look at the owners manual and nothing else. According to the 2022 US Civic owners manual:

""Your vehicle is not designed to tow a trailer. Attempting tow do so can void your warranties."

Euro and US tow ratings cannot be conflated.

That is kind of the point. Someone may have towed 1000 lbs with a civic, even if it wasn't rated for it, and I'm sure someone will tow 2000 with the Slate. In both cases, any damage caused will void the warrantee, and if something really goes wrong, you may end up with both civil and criminal liability, and insurance is going to say you are on your own.

That says what the hitch Is rated to, not what the car is rated to. All class 1 hitches are 200/2k rated, because that's the definition of a Class 1 hitch and there is nothing lower. See the Miata hitch for further evidence of this. Heck, the Civic hitch even requires cutting sheet metal, which I'm sure Honda does not approve of either.

The aftermarket Slate hitches will have the same 200/2k hitch rating regardless of what the manufacturer tow rating is. Regardless of the hitch rating, exceeding the manufacturer vehicle rating is entirely at the owner's risk.

@KevinRS thinks "it keeps getting repeated that a civic tows 1000 lbs", which hasn't happened. You and he believe the Civic can't tow.

Why does this matter?

The thread is about people having unrealistic expectations of truck-like capabilities the Truck doesn't have because the Truck is built on a car-like platform.

I think a Subaru Forester, Honda CR-V, or Toyota RAV4 are Compact Utility Vehicles despite not having a bed.

I learned a long time ago that the best utility vehicle value is a used minivan, haul more than many light duty pickups and you can easily secure the contents.

False. I believe anything that produces power can tow. But 'can' tow and 'rated' to tow are two very different things. I know the previous gen Toyota Tundra can tow 300k lb of Space Shuttle, but also that it is only rated to tow ~10k lb of trailer.

The Civic not being rated to tow isn't a belief, it is a fact.

Why does this matter?
Preventing the spread of misinformation always matters.

Those are compact SUVs, not CUVs.

So true. And the contents can be locked inside.

Then you should've written that. Instead you wrote this misinformation:

It is indeed important.

In multiple threads here I've seen mention of "even a civic can tow 1000 lbs" though I can't find them at the moment, and so I was looking for the actual tow rating for the civic. You've got to compare apples to apples. As I said in this thread, sure a civic "can" tow, but unless someone finds where it is rated to tow in the US by the manufacturer, civic tow rating is zero, compared to Slate tow rating of 1000 lbs planned.
Just as people "can" tow with an unrated car, I'm sure some people here in this forum will be towing 2000 lbs or more with a slate, even if it voids their warrantee.

Maybe they mean the Civic pickup aka the Honda Ridgeline.
