Depending on how simple the Slate setup is it may just be looking for that 'on' signal from the reverse lights or however a lot of aftermarket backup cameras are set up... you know, if you wanted to disable it :lipssealed:

no, it will likely be just pick up the data from the CAN network in the car that the rest of the information for the display comes from, speed, temps, etc.

I hope that's right, but I've got a feeling that the housing is bigger but the screen itself is still the same small square in the middle when I look at it. Prove me wrong, PLEASE!
Th display needs to be very large and not cluttered just focused on the task at hand. Also must have a display in front of the driver depicting whats coming up and current position so driver can focus on whats ahead and not trying to read a display off on the side. Another must have for me are temp gauges accessible in the menu for bats engine and all criticle components.

Disabling a federally mandated safety feature is something I would never want to do as a small accident can all be on you.

Another federally mandated feature is the pedestrian AVAS safety feature for the sound but not knowing if you run over someone and they found out you disabled it - would not like to be in that position.
AVAS pedestrian safety sounds - low speed and reverse

Why would anyone want to disable the rear view camera? I sincerely hope you don’t parallel park your Slate in front of mine! What if some little kids are playing in the street while you back up and your rearview mirrors don't pick them up?

Oh believe me, I wouldn't be disabling it in my own, I won't speak for others but I have heard of people intentionally disabling that pedestrian alert sound and backup cameras, much like people have done for emissions controls in diesels.

We had a friend of the family t-bone a red light runner which ended up being fatal for the other party. The family of the red light runner tried to use anything they could to prove some sort of fault for our family friend in civil court, down to trying to prove they weren't wearing their prescription sunglasses at the time, thus could have prevented a full-speed collision. I'm not taking any chances.
