I don’t follow super close on the details of the truck, but rear cameras are required by vehicle code in the US. So camera in the mirror would make sense for the Slate.
So instead of the basic idea of a no frills truck you want to add unnecessary gizmos.

It’s a federal law to have the camera lol. If you’re going to have a backup camera, it makes more sense to have it in the mirror then the gauge display.

it’s amazing how worked up folks have gotten about a simple mirror comment.

Not many gauge displays get damaged in the supermarket parking lot though.

How is your rear view mirror getting damaged in a super market parking lot? Are you flailing around? In all the cars I’ve ever owned I’ve never had an issue with a rear view mirror.

You were talking about having tv monitors as part of door mirrors, or maybe I'm confused.

IMHO, the problem with the back-up cameras in the rear view mirror is they are too small to be useful. When the law went into effect it was probably easiest to integrate into the rear view mirrors that they were likely sourcing from Gentex. As they have had time to iterate they have moved them to the screens which have gotten larger since the law went into affect. As it is, I will probably need to use reading glasses to use the display on the Slate, I did need reading glasses on the Leaf I previously owned.

I think it will be very interesting to see how they do this because I don't see how they will fit a usable backup camera display in the gauge cluster without taking away all the information that needs displayed like the speed, state of charge or specifically any icons.

Why would you need any of that stuff while you’re backing up though? I mean it’s a video display. They can just remove all those things to show the backup camera and then put them all back on when you’re going forward.

That's a fair point and I personally can't think of any, I just prefer any warning icons to not move or be covered. Although, looking at some of the dash screens we have seen, this won't be a problem. But I could also see the wheel blocking the backup camera being inconvenient.

Go back and look at the original comment I quoted about the rear view mirror view on the last page.
You are correct.
I saw your posting #73 of this thread, and my befuddled brain saw the picture as a door mirror.
My apologies.

I modified my tundra to have a rear view mirror backup camera. It is completely useful.

The bigger screen in my other cars definitely helps some, but the tiny one in the rearview is fine.

On some vehicles now, the whole rearview mirror is a screen, touching a button switches it on and it displays a view from a rear camera that is wider angled than the regular mirror view seen when it is off. Additionally the view is not blocked by a rear passenger's head or a load. This is separate from the larger screen showing a big rear view when in reverse gear.
