I’m torn , on one hand I want relatively no tech, on the other I want to use my cell phone as a key to operate the vehicle if they have an app or remote door locks and remote start (remote heat and cooling)

Not need the key to drive

I started a thread about that. No info yet on those phone features or whether or not there will be a subscription for them. Also I have that NFC feature now. Helpful if I run out to the car for something and forgot my key but have my phone. Annoying if you don’t want to carry the key at all. I have to hold the phone to the door handle to open the car and put it in the center console and leave it there while driving.

I'm not super familiar with the way other cars use the phone app to verify ownership of your vehicle when locking and unlocking, but this thread has me thinking that using some form of 2FA tied to the NFC radio on phones could be a FOSS means to authenticate ownership through phones. An app like Aegis but tailored for cars would be super in the case of Slate.

Biggest problem is that this could be a vulnerability and make it easier to steal. If it requires tapping a button on the screen rather than doing it automatically it could mitigate this.

Heres a good article describing BMWs ultra wide band (UWB) digital keys and how they work. Technically, its not NFC, bluetooth, or wifi.

Edit to clarify that first gen digital keys are NFC and require you to tap the handle with the phone. The new UWB keys detect your proximity and unlock as you approach.

Tesla has this perfected using BLE IIRC. Any relatively recent phone model functions as a key. You just walk up to your car and it silently unlocks. No thinking about it or anything like keyless entry but you don't have to carry a fob.

Of course, there may be other makes and models that do this well, but I don't own it. The connected features are something I will really miss, they aren't just convenient but also save energy.

My Ford Lightning Lariat has this feature and it okay. It’s nice not have to Carrie the somewhat oversized key fob, but it’s no where near as responsive and reliable as the fob. It gets frustrating when it doesn’t connect as quickly as you as you approach the truck and you have to wait or try a couple of times before the doors unlock.

I can live without it on my SLATE.

If I remember a video interview they did slay they would have remote start most likely from the key but they can put that in the app like ford does for my f-150 power boost

It works perfectly on a 2018 Model 3, it might have been F.o.r.d. bad back in the day but it's never an issue and hasn't been for years. The connected features really made the car special, and it was so well done years ago that the competition is still far behind. You have to really use the car to see how seamless some thing are. Too bad it's a tesla, I'm really rooting for Slate

Only problem is that I think it requires a number of antennas since the car knows where you are on approach. Can't be good for cost. Sounds like a job for clever engineering.

I’ve never had a issue with my key fob the app kinda sucks because sometimes it dosnt connect it sucked the most when it was cold XD and I wanted a warm truck

I'd trust Tesla more than Ford to make effective use of existing wireless technologies. Ford always seems to take 2 steps forward and 4 steps back, negating any progress with their botched execution.
