Ok, so practical application: Let’s say I wanted to get a Modern Spare for the Slate instead of a full sized one. I guess it would make sense to potentially make a custom Spare holder that is much smaller than the cool-looking full sized spare on the rear.
How would I take that idea from basic measurements to a simple spare holder that would be entirely enclosed and also hold the jack, wrench, etc, and end up with an aesthetically pleasing carriage solution on the back that is much smaller than the one offered (saving drag and weight?)?

One good thing about a later delivery window is time to print your own stuff based on the files Slate will be providing. Hopefully they will start sharing them before the first deliveries begin.

3D printing "functional parts" (i.e. things that are subject to non-trivial mechanical loads and have strength and stiffness requirements) is a rabbit hole at the bottom of the rabbit hole. The manufacturing method doesn't change the need for mechanical engineering. I've spent the last couple years living at the bottom of that rabbit hole for another hobby. I find it really enjoyable, but I've learned that even with advanced (and expensive) engineering materials (things like carbon fiber reinforced PPA and PPS), 3D printed parts still have major strength limitations. I won't say someone can't develop something like a mostly 3D printed spare tire carrier, but my experience says that it would ultimately be 5 - 10x the cost of having a welder fabricate out of aluminum or steel.
The 3D printing "sweet spot" for Slate will be trim pieces and interior. For example, custom mounting brackets for devices, speakers, tools, etc. inside the cab is well aligned with the size/strength capabilities of consumer printers and materials.
