Haven’t followed this forum too much, has there been much safety forums on crash results?

Highway speeds and in town?

Slate vs 3500 pickup, slate vs similar size SUV?

There were many small one crunch wonders put out by ICE domestic and overseas that didn’t make the cut on survivability in the past.

We are still waiting to hear how the safety ratings turnout.

Slate emphasized early on they were going for a full 5 Star Safety Institute rating. (Good have Goals) but there has been indication how close to that they are getting and we will likely not have the full picture until after the vehicle is released.

That was tried with the F150 Lightning , but was very short lived. Ford stepped in and put a cease and desist out on the originator.

That thread went silent in short order.

I personally don’t mind the sound EVs make at low speed. Tire noise isn’t that loud at low speeds on most tires and smooth-ish concrete/asphalt. While a lot of modern, stock ICEVs are quieter than they used to be, they are still considerably louder than an electric motor at low speed is. But I’m sure someone will work very hard the moment we have our hands on the truck to figure out patching in a new sound.

Tesla and Rivian do. Slate is a little different with the lack of storefronts, or whatever they call their physical buildings, but it is not out of the realm of possibility.

Those trucks have to go somewhere once they drop off their Slates...
Maybe via a 3rd party as a convenience?

Also, will Slate take trade-ins or will that be thru one of the car web sites?
I plan on just taking my car down to CarMax. I was a car salesman for 2 years and I'm not interested in picking up that hat again, even for a couple of weeks.

Although I’ve done well selling via Craigslist, the last two I went with a used car dealer that offered me enough that doing myself wasn’t worth the risk or hassle.

Carvana can be a good option. I used them once and I got a good price and it was very hassle free. For something a little older that may not be pristine, I’ve had good luck with Facebook Marketplace.

The NHTSA has to approve any new vehicle before it's sold, not after the vehicle is released.
And on checking the NHTSA crash test database they don't even have Slate listed yet.

I certainly don’t have source to disagree with your position. My reference is based on the the Ford Mavericks I owned shortly after they became available and the Window stickers did not list all the safety rating results. I don’t recall which was missing, but I recall it saying something to the affect of Not Yet Determined.

To respond to the OP:

  1. How it will do in the snow. Not the cold, the snow. Is it going to be an open rear end?
  2. The resale when they make a 4wd one in five years.
  3. Will it have the get-up-and-go to actally get to 75 in a reasonable time considering the 90mph top speed (is it electronically limited to 90?)
  4. ????????
  5. Profit.

A friend sent me some comments on Reddit where folks who sat in one Slate criticized the interior as cheap and plasticky. I understand that we all have different standards. I am happy in my base/mid trim cars around $20K, others require premium everything.

I don't think all the Slate designers/engineers/executives would be ok with a cheap feel. Besides, it is made in the USA. 💪

I am definitely buying. Won't need a test drive because all you early birds will surely comment on the handling and etc. Doors come standard so I am all set! 😄
Only if you want doors ;)

They already did testing specifically for #1 and posted video. Look for the slush test. They drove it through a slush pool then into a freezer container at various temperatures, to intentionally freeze the slush into ice all over the drive train, wiring and braking systems, and apparently it passed with flying colors.

Not really a very informative video. They said that the DID it but didn't show any real results. Which I'm not worried about, anyway. I mean the driving dynamics in deeper snow. Even as little as 4-6" of snow. I don't expect it to be a snowmobile but getting stuck coming up my back drive would be a bit embarrassing...

And yes, I understand that the tires make the difference. But 1wd is certainly limiting.
