This truck is going to be my first EV. I also live in the snowy north, so snow tires will be a must.

Any recommendations on brands and compounds? I usually rock the blizzakz, but I imagine EV specific ones will be better for the range.

Can't imagine a EV specific compound making much of a difference in snow conditions. Finding a snow tire made for something of the correct weight would be what I would be looking for.
I'm not well versed in snow tires tho.

Sort of what I figured. Snow tires are usually a soft compound which have higher RR, so I was curious if there were any low RR tires with the snow tread pattern.

Isn’t the slate truck only supposed to be 4-5kip? That’s not too much worse than other cars out there

When I was a Yankee, I was always happy with either Blizzaks or Nokians - maybe a slight edge to the Nokians. I'm sure they have EV rated versions of them these days.

If you think you live in an area that needs snow tires - just get good snow tires. I'm not even sure if I've seen "low RR" snow tires - it seems like that would almost defeat the purpose if they focus at all on low RR. You're probably then sacrificing some amount of traction.

I have Vredestein snows on my Mach-E and they're just fine (usually would get Blizzaks but I couldn't find them in the right size). I also went more narrow for the snows than my summer tires - I'm sure it's next to nothing, but the thought was the narrower tire may at least help to offset any of the rolling resistance losses.

I've searched on TireRack.com. There are no EV specific tires in the standard Slate tire size available at all. The best you can do is find low rolling resistance tires. Michelin Cross Climate tires are available and they are really good in snow.

Nokian Tyres
Hakkapeliitta® R5 SUV

"Nokian Tyres understands that high-quality tires bring out the best in powerful electric vehicles. Battery packs inside EV and hybrid vehicles make them heavier and therefore slower to stop than cars with internal combustion engines (ICEs). Nokian Tyres products are designed to provide extra grip to compensate for the added weight, while maximizing EV and hybrid vehicle's driving range. We’ve made strides to minimize our tires’ rolling resistance, decreasing the amount of energy needed for each journey. Our products can take your EV further with a single charge while minimizing its environmental footprint. For over a decade, our tires have been made to be a seamless safety fit for electric and hybrid vehicles. The ELECTRIC FIT™ emblem on our more recent tires' sidewalls certifies this. Nokian Tyres helps you drive further. "

I’ll look into those. I didn’t know that “three mountain” rating existed before.

I’ve just had “all seasons” that are meant for a winter in the South. Not 8” of snow.

I'm planning to try out the Nokian Outpost APT (235/55R19 XL at ~29.2" dia), since they have 3PMSF and EV-approved designation. These will be my all-year solution for what I tend to get into during the different seasons.

I think a lot of manufacturers are getting away from the EV designation and just marketing them as ECO tires and then recommending them for EVs.

Many people around my area just put extra weight in their trunk or truck bed.

The "next size down" from stock, 235/65R17, is only 1.7% smaller in both radius and diameter. There are some good tire choices in that size, probably because of the type of vehicles that come with that size from the factory.

I think if you got 235/70R17 or 225/75R17 they all have the same outside diameter so would be a better sub for the OEM size. I don’t need snows in Georgia but plan to replace with 225/75R17 after I wear the OEMs out.
