Jeff Bezos-backed EV startup Slate has hired a former Lucid North America sales leader months before deliveries of its debut model begin.

Yeager served as Head of North America Sales Operations at Lucid Motors for the past three years, and previously worked at Tesla from 2016 to 2018, ending her tenure there as Director of Sales.

At Slate, she will take on the title of Head of Sales, leading the startup’s direct-to-consumer sales model and go-to-market execution across sales, inside sales, customer experience, fleet sales, analytics, and S&OP.

Seems like a great move for Ms. Yeager. She basically gets to do the same job for the third time, learning from whatever mistakes she undoubtedly made along the way.

And for Slate: the number of people who have had success as leader of sales at multiple startup car companies in the USA can probably be counted on one hand. Perhaps on one finger.

Why do you need a head of sales? There's already a long line of eager buyers all they need to do is make the damn things so they can be sold.

Short term, they need someone who sees to it that the sales process works and goes smoothly. Long term that extends into advertising and getting future sales.

2016 - 2018 was right before Tesla released the Model 3. Seems like she got out at the wrong time...

All I've seen of Lucid is steep price cuts for the last year or so.

Maybe now they'll finally start revealing actual details about the car...

My initial reaction is that Yeager has changed jobs often, not staying long enough to have an impact. But what do I know. Some things sell better on their own merits along the lines of 'build a better mousetrap.'

I'm just going from memory (didn't Goggleit)... But as I remember Tesla's early days, 2012 - 2018 (I followed it pretty closely) the Model 3 was introduced by Musk in grand fanfare (without the interior - LOL) for $35K and 400,000 reservations came in within two (2) weeks or so. The Model S was well known by 2016 and the Model X had been revealed but 2-years late to production. I'm not sure Tesla even needed a sales/marketing department (to your point). Unfortunately, the Model 3 came in at $55K - $60K out of the box and the 400,000 reservations did not materialize into 400,000 of initial sales.

The Lucid Pure is a great car and IMO the best EV sedan on the market, but it is rather expensive (Slate's point I guess). For a good 12 to 16 months now Lucid has been discounting the Pure down from $73K for the basic trim level to about $62K, slightly lower if you have a "conquest" brand they are trying to convert you from. If I wanted an EV sedan, the Lucid Pure is where I'd go. It's a better mouse trap other than the price...

I'm not sure Yeager has been effective selling the Lucid is my point. And Tesla back in 2016 - 2018 were selling themselves.

Lucid might soon be out of the competition for a long range EV sedan if the BMW i3x is any indication. It's a crossover but already gets over 400miles of range and avoids any of the cheapy feeling stuff and poorly tuned suspension you'd find in a Lucid. The new i3 appears like it will get even more range, which would very well mean the new i5 and i7 will get the same tech treatment really putting Lucid behind the curve.

Currently Lucid stock is affordable at around $6/share. 😂
