This seems dumb to me. Granted, I'm pretty stupid, but-

>> Electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid vehicles are required to emit noise at low speeds to alert pedestrians, as they are significantly quieter than traditional gasoline cars. The specific requirements vary by region, but generally, these vehicles must produce a warning sound at speeds below a certain threshold, often around 18-20 mph (30 km/h), and when reversing. This is often achieved through an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS). <<

One of the things I look forward too is a quiet vehicle, and I'm not even adding a sound system. But sheeeet! My Slate is required to make noise! Blasphemy I say!

I hope this obnoxious requirement can be defeated! Pedestrians be damned!

If done properly, you shouldn't be able to hear it from inside the truck. But we'll see. It would be fun if you could have a different sound, like a custom ringtone.

Agreed. Actually, there have been a few recalls on ev's that are too quiet. Like the Dodge Charger and the Chevy Equinox. I find some of the artificial pedestrian warning sounds a bit annoying, like the new Honda Prologue and the Tesla when in reverse gear.

Modern ICE cars can be nearly as quiet to pedestrians as EV's in many low speed circumstances, and even quieter than is being required of EV's despite the 'safety' reasons.

Either ICE sounds are sufficiently safe and EV's shouldn't be required to be any louder than the quietest EV cars, and it should be allowed to be circumstantially (idling, accelerating, coasting) dependent, or modern ICE cars are also not sufficiently safe and should be required to meet the same minimum sound levels at all times within the speed threshold.

Our ID4 lets out a little hum when moving slowly, like in the neighborhood. I don't notice it anymore, but the ID4 is also has really good cabin noise isolation, so there's that.

I also tend to not do much traveling below 15 MPH, so it's pretty much a non issue for me. Now that I think about it, I don't think the ID4 makes the noise in stop and go traffic...unless it just gets drowned out by the Mustangs and Chargers with catback exhausts

My wife's Mazda CX-90 (mild hybrid) has a low speed pedestrian noise. So it's not just EVs.

My Wrangler is comparatively quiet...sometimes I'm startled when Rav4' s are backing/coasting...I couldn't handle that al all.

Edit: I suppose startling is the point after all, but still..

Just about all of the commercial stuff (excavators, backhoes, loaders etc) that I have ever used have REALLY annoying backup alarms
SO, your digging a ditch, loading it into a truck, the entire neighborhood has their Sunday ruined by your beeping. And this is NOT a quiet vehicle either.

I favor silent, no alarms, nothing. If you are a pedestrian, stay away from moving vehicles.
Of course this means a total redesign of every retail parking lot in the US.

About time!

Might be more fun if it could be customized into something particularly annoying to pedestrians.

It should be "Silent but deadly"
just like a really wicked fart!

But no, seriously, why do you want to annoy pedestrians?
after all, you are just one person, all the way from your 3-ton SUV to the store.

SO? my "Alert" would be a bit funkier, say early-Abba, maybe some old-Stones,
perhaps some Julian-Bream? maybe even TSO?
Or perhaps I'm showing my age.

I know, you always park in the closest possible spot,
legs so atrophied you cannot walk 20 yards.
Even tho you go to the gym every day, and walk mile or more inside the store?

So? Park-far
- walk
- smile
- say hello to folk you meet on the way
- and their dogs.

You might make a few friends that way

For all that is holy and sacred, please, just give me a quiet vehicle. Its all I ever wanted.
I'll pay extra.

True, but times have changed apparently. Seems I learned when walking in rear of parked cars and you noticed back up lights or someone one trying to ease out you stopped, maybe waved. Nowadays it’s like those same actions are an invitation to get in back of vehicle to make it stop.

agree, see your point, but my point is in a parking lot you should never have to walk BEHIND a vehicle, any vehicle, not even a motorcycle.

There should be a pedestrian-path. Thats where you walk (or push your shopping cart with 300lb of groceries), right up to your car/truck/mega-thingy

Right now its not done that way because of the "rules" for parking lots.

so? lets change the rules.

I agree! It's really not even hard, just takes more space and space costs money so they need incentive to do it.
