Will you be using a phone or tablet as your interface device? Or switching between them?

I think the BYOD bring-your-own-device approach is brilliant. Saves cost and who doesn't have a phone and tablet these days. It also solves the issue of built in infotainment hardware becoming obsolete. All you gotta do is upgrade your phone or tablet as you usually would and your Slate instantly has updated infotainment hardware :like:

Since I don't think I'll be keeping a tablet in the holder permanently, I think I'll be switching between phone and tablet depending if I feel like (or remember to) bring a tablet out with me. Those times when I don't, I'll just plug in the phone.

Using the tablet interface because my poor eyeballs sometimes need that bigger screen. Though I really do like the option to do both if needed. Though I’m curious about how the tablet/phone will charge. Is it gonna be one of those things where it charges via wireless/charging pad thing? I didn’t see anything clear cut yet. šŸ¤”

Phone probably to start just because my current tablet is wifi only. Would probably look for a refurbished iPad mini with cellular as an early upgrade.

I would more than likely use a tablet for majority of things . Would be easier to navigate google auto and Spotify than having to use my pixel 7

I would like to use a tablet, but would need to come up with a quick easy way to hide it. I am also concerned about temperature extremes if leaving it in there. Car interiors can hit 150F or more in the summer. Because of that I'll probably stick to the phone.

From Apple:
iPad is designed to work in ambient temperatures between 32° and 95° F (0° and 35° C) and stored in temperatures between -4° and 113° F (-20° and 45° C).

I'll use my phone for audio, turn-by-turn Google Maps, and Slate SW updates. Hopefully Slate will sell a plug & play, 200W Bluetooth amp and Speaker kit (or maybe Crutchfield).

Yes, very important point. I carry my iphone and iPad everywhere As my eyes are not what they used to be……. I have had the heat warnings when I leave the iPad in the seat. The dash would be much worse.
May have to work out a bracket that works with the cover on the iPad.

I never leave my phone in my vehicle and don’t expect that to change if I used a tablet as I would not want to leave it in the Slate. That means lugging a tablet around with me when I park…no thanks. I use my phone for navigation/music in my FJ now and it works just fine. I weaned myself off CarPlay years ago…

I’m sure they will offer a slick BT amplified speaker setup, but don’t expect more than three speakers and definitely nothing in the doors. Some enterprising company is going to offer an audio system package for the SUV that uses the roll cage for mounting speakers in back.

The past few days, I've been daydreaming of the possibility of an e-ink tablet instead of a traditional screen. I really only need it to play music and podcasts. All my driving is local so I don’t need navigation. E-ink would be slick, low power, no glare, easy to see in the sun.

For everyday driving I'd choose neither if that's an option.

Is it an option? If I were to drive somewhere and lose or break my phone would I be unable to drive home? What about letting someone else borrow my Slate Truck? Would they need to install an app, or would they need to borrow my phone to drive the truck?

If I know my speed and the state of charge I'm golden.

It's absolutely an option to not have a screen at all. Everything you need to drive is on the speedometer screen behind the steering wheel. The only reason you would want a phone/tablet is for hands-free music or navigation, guidance to a nearby charge station if the battery is low, or the occasional firmware update for the truck itself.
