My ideal set up would be to use both my cell phone and a tablet at the same time. I do not want to pay two cellular bills, so I need a way to tether a tablet which I need for the bigger display for my older eyes. According to Katie at Slate there is no way to mount them both simultaneously. It is one or the other.

Lay the phone in the console and if your phone has hot spot capability connect the tablet to it that way. That is what I plan to do.

I'm not sure specifically how you intend to use both, but FWIW you can enable a hotspot on one and join that WiFi network with the other one.

I guess the phone stays in your pocket or laying flat in the console, and the tablet gets mounted to the T-rail. I like your idea!

As mentioned, use your hotspot. Tablet goes in the standard mount, phone goes on the vent just like a Slatelet. You can get a "vent clip" phone mount for $20 from Walmart or Best Buy.

No way *using Slate's accessories* to mount them both simultaneously. There's an open t-track for mounting whatver you want. Some personal inginuity, or a crafty Etsy seller, will give you lots of options.

And using the hotspot on your phone really won't use more data because you won't be using the data on your phone. But check your provider some of them have a much higher rate on the phone itself and less on the hotspot. Probably some way to mirror the tablet from the phone with Bluetooth or something?

problem with phone based hotspots is that most phones do not keep hotspot functionality on permanantly (for good reasons), the net effect being the need to manually enable it each time you drive... which is a bit "unsmooth".

I know it sounds very much like a 1st world problem, but managing hotspot on a phone is kind of an annoyance in the context of frequent and short auto trips.

I get not wanting a second data plan, I really don't want it either; I certainly don't want 3 if I fall into the telematics rabbithole.

For the OP - not sure if you really are saying that want/need both the phone and table active/available while driving. Are you saying that you want to retain safe ability to take/make calls, but have a big screen for all other uses (ie Maps)?

Another option would be just to upgrade to the XL size screen phone. I have Android auto on my Maverick and it's nice... But I also have a cheap wireless charging mount on a fiesta and it works just fine, And I always got the XL size phone for that for navigation.

FWIW, on my phone it's trivial.
Pull down, tap button.

Check with your phone carrier.
For some, hotspot access costs extra.
For some, a tablet sim card sharing the data already on the phone plan costs nothing extra monthly.
I plan to just use my phone, won't need nav for most trips, when I do use it I mostly listen to it, maybe glance to see upcoming lane or exit info.
You can just leave hotspot data on on your phone, but it may not be a good idea.
