Unfortunately, 36 states, it might be 37 now charge an extra fee to electric vehicle owners when you renew your registration. They use this extra fee for the road tax that we do not pay for because we’re not buying gasoline. I don’t mind paying to repair my fair share of the roads, but the way they charge it is not fair They are charging the electric vehicle owner a flat fee. I live in New Jersey and the amount of road tax that they charge me is equivalent to 20,000 miles worth of driving. The really bad part is I own three electric vehicles in New Jersey and so I pay that amount for each one of them But I only drive like 15,000 miles between the three cars So I’m paying for 45,000 miles of road tax that I don’t drive That’s not fair There’s a system called MBUFA, it stands for mileage based user fee alliance, and what they are Proposing is paying for the road tax based on the weight of your vehicle and the actual miles that you drive every year. That sounds much more fair A lot of people who drive 50,000 miles a year pay more. And the people who drive 6000 miles a year will pay just for those 6000 miles NJMVC Charges me $964 a year
