Oh, I just gave it a shot too and it seems to be working fine. After closing out all the subscription offers.

Interesting, mine opened to a subscription screen, but even so, that location screen doesnt show much. I don’t need another screen for music access

It’s easier to see and use while driving than the default screen

I do feel like I’m trying to sell the idea of Apple CarPlay and Android auto here lol

the #1 thing is to not let your phones screen turn off which it normally will
after that I want to use voice control that my phone has to access functions. No buttons needed at all.

The app I linked above keeps the screen on. Hoping the Slate app is similar. Also, you should be able to talk to your phone hands free as it is.

Interesting points here.

I wonder how that would go over? I'm not sure that restricting access to one's phone/mobile would be a big hit. I mean, I understand the liability here. But still... 🤔
You could always exit the app. The point would be the app would give you what you need, in a format that you can use at arms length, and not show stuff you don't need cluttering up the screen. If you really want to play pokemon go while driving, it's not going to stop you.

An Android app can use a flag (FLAG_KEEP_SCREEN_ON) that keeps the screen on while the app is active in the foreground.

Android Auto used to be able to run on the device itself, but that was discontinued (in 2022?) in favor of Google Assistant's Driving Mode.

As one might expect, it was an unpopular change.
