Wrap Samples Without Shipping Cost

Spent a little money back when the wrap names had 1:1 matches to 3M's line. Will wait until things settle before I do that again, rather than guessing.

While we can't yet be absolutely sure, I attempt to cross-reference the colors on the maker to the images on the Avery Dennison and 3M sites for my best guesses.
Or if you prefer a fast way to compare you can download each brand's color charts.

My guess would be that Feather Boa, which Slate lists as gloss finish, looks to me to be 3M's Fierce Fuchsia #G348

You can buy a sample for $1.49 at Amazon and maybe take the sample to a future Slate event to compare directly if they have samples or a wall of colors on display.

That's what I did to confirm that Slate's dark red color called Lipstick is actually Avery's "Gloss Passion Red".

The main issue is we don't know who Slate is getting wraps from. It may be Avery or 3M, but it may not be finalized yet. That is my current theory on it, and why we haven't seen some better representation of actual colors. Swatches would be good, but we don't even have photos or video of them, just renders that are inconsistent.

I very much agree the representation of colors has been inconsistent on Slate's site, but that may be more of an overall difficulty with any web based presentation. If you go to the manufacturers' and various distributor/installers' sites they have the same issue with color shading being inconsistent across their own sites, let alone when comparing from one site to another.
Definitely, real life samples of some sort are required.

But I am 99% sure the wraps will be from 3M and Avery.
Those 2 are the industry market share leaders. And considered the industry standard by installers.
Also, they are domestic. The next 3 largest market shares belong to manufacturers in Europe and the UK.
It would add more supply and cost (tariffs) risks if they sourced from overseas.
The remaining domestic manus hold something like a combined 10% market share. They are surely not big enough to provide as secure a supply line for a car company which projects shipping up to 150K units in following years and has wraps as one of the tent poles of their marketing plan.

The TFL Truck video of the price reveal event had the best discussion of wraps with the Slate exec. While he repeatedly said they were not officially announcing anything, he did mention Avery and 3M by name in reference to warranty quality.
You wouldn't name them directly if you planned on using a supplier who isn't Avery or 3M. Never wise to refer to a competitor name as a standard. 😉
He also used the term "colorflow" which is a registered trademark of Avery.

Thanks! That's exactly the conclusion I drew, too. I ordered Fierce Fuscia and it is so much darker than in the Maker when doing a two-tone color scheme. But oddly, if I do a full wrap in the Maker, it comes out as dark as Fierce Fuscia. We have all had unusual rendering experiences in Maker...If Fierce Fuscia IS Feather Boa, I will be searching for a different color. 😞
As the only two Majors in the wrap industry that are US-made, I am sure Avery and 3M are the only players that fit with Slate's reshoring-manufacturing mission. So I have another few samples coming from them.

My thinking though is we don't know if it will be Avery, 3M, or both. That could be the reason we aren't seeing name matchups, swatches, etc, even at events. Slate may not have everything finalized, or may not have until recently and not have those things set up yet.

Sometimes I think too mathematically. When I got the email I was thinking like this distributive property:

3*(x+y) = 3x + 3y​

So when the email said "around", I thought like this:

around(wrap+install) = around $500 wrap and around $500 install​

But I think you are right. They are going to charge $500. I told ya'll in a different thread that this heat is getting to me and clouding my judgement. Slate better not send me an email to order another truck because I just may.

From the video, Scooter tells the interviewer:

(Your) Vinyl choice(s) will be cut to kit pattern at the Kentucky plant.

(Your) Wrap-kit will be shipped to the delivery point for your Slate for installation.

or

(Your) Wrap-kit will be shipped to YOU for your Slate for installation.


"To the delivery point" tells me that there isn't a central location for wrap installation. Not at the Warsaw plant nor at the Kentucky Wrap Central site.

If true, that means "delivery points" can't be the hundreds of Carvana or similar....no way they're gonna have some wrap guy at each location. If true, it means delivery points will be very limited in number as in "regional" and then cover several states like:

Dallas: TX, OK, LA, MS, AR, NM
Cali: SoCal, AZ, NV, UT
Cali: NorCaL, WA, OR, ID
Minn: MN, ND, SD, WY, CO


You get the idea.
