Will the Slate’s 8 seconds to 60 mph be adequate for safe highway merging?

Anyone coming from a sports / performance vehicle may have to deal with adjustments in driving habits in the Slate. For example, I can envision that merging on the highway with shorter acceleration lanes will present challenges in faster moving traffic, especially when you are used to a faster vehicle.

I didn’t see this real world metric addressed at this level, so I wanted to open it up for discussion. Thanks for your inputs.

It's lower than most EVs, but comparable with a lot of inexpensive ICE vehicles. It could take some adjustment, depending on what you're coming from, but is adequate. Being an EV, it should still have good torque off the line even if it does take a little time to get to 60.

ive been driving a 4.6 tundra crewmax with an 8 second 0-60 for 15 years. It is fine for highway merges. I rarely even need to floor it all the way.

But they give you a little room bc you are bigger! I experience that with my Lightning vs smaller Camry, as example. Smaller vehicles naturally yield to bigger ones. The big trucks…don’t.
Give me AWD and 0-60 in about 5-6 secs, please.

My old Prius C was 11 second 0 to 60, it was fine, you usually get up to speed on the on ramp anyways. Safety wise it's fine, but if people are looking for pep they're not going to be looking here anyways.

the interesting thing is that pep is 0-30 and the 0-30 of the EV will be better than most ices.

The slow 0-60 time is concerning to me. Manageable? Sure. Desireable? No. I like the idea of a Slate very much. But I may not be a first adopter and instead wait for a two motor 4-wheel drive version in the second iteration of the Slate. I haven't cancelled my reservation. But an EV taking 8 seconds to 60 is well below current market standards.

My 4 cylinder Ranger used to take 10.5 seconds. You just learn to think ahead and anticipate. It actually makes you a more attentive, better driver IMHO. Now would I still like a 5 or 6 second AWD Slate? Yup!

I have a 77 Cadillac that takes a long time to get to 60. I agree you can learn to anticipate what it will take to get to speed (and with the Caddy to slow down or stop). But I don't expect that in a new vehicle. And being able to accelerate quickly is also a safety feature. Maybe I am in the minority, but the 0-60 time is concerning to me.

My ‘79 Monte Carlo was a beast…0-60 in like 10.5 secs! But it was such a barge, most had time to evaluate the physics of that much weight hitting them…and they helped accommodate my merging.

I drive a 2022 Lightning that does 0-60 in 3.8ish. It will be an adjustment (and disappointing) going between it and the Slate. I plan on keeping both.

Is that how fast they are? I’ve never tested mine…it’s unnerving how fast it is (never hit the Sport Mode button) and I NEVER have merging issues…big AND fast!

I got a 63 beetle in 1974 when I turned 16. Zero to Sixty was measured in fortnights.

My daily driver. 55 Willys wagon chevy 250 0-60 with the wind. Sometimes. In 15 years never had a concern with merging. What concerns me most is some kid watching his or hers phone instead of whats in front.
