I like SimpleRadio. All my local stations are accessible, and I enjoy access to most stations across the country. I found a few stations inaccessible, especially from the very large markets such as WMMR in Philadelphia.

I think there are a few cell phones that will receive FM, but I have never seen a phone that would receive AM. That said, due to the lack of a decent antenna for those frequency bands, reception would be poor anyway. Your best bet would be to buy a portable AM/FM radio to see if it would work at all in the elevated RF noise environment and if it is worth it to buy a car radio to have installed. Cell phone streaming would be another option, assuming the areas you travel have good service.

https://radio.garden/ works great with no need to install any apps. They have one but you can just use a browser.

My Motorola has an included FM Radio app:

that works as an FM radio receiver. You do have to plug in a pair of headphones or an audio cable to a 3.5mm jack for the antenna to work (it won't be compatible with your phone if you don't have a 3.5mm jack). No, streaming radio through the browser or an app over a data connection is not the same.

I really like Motorola and think their tablets/phones with a basic, unadulterated Android experience would be a good fit for Slate users. Their G7 Play is only $165 and could easily be permanently mounted. With offline maps loaded to the micro SD card, you wouldn't even need a SIM card and data plan.

However, if I wanted a radio in my truck (I don't), I'd probably go with a basic single-DIN head unit from Crutchfield or similar:

Stick it in a 3D printed receiver in the dash, add a couple of 3-way speakers, burn a CD with your favorites, and hit the road!

I know this isn't a direct answer to your question. But I have a little Ryobi AM/FM/BT radio for out in the shop. I plan to use it in the Slate. It picks up pretty well for the most part, and the small 1.5ah battery lasts a very long time in it.
