My biggest concern is even though Slate is a Michigan based company, the Direct purchase process may still have problems. I had to drive to Ohio to purchase my first Tesla, and I have not heard how Slate will address this. The dealer lobby is very strong in Michigan.

Also, will Slate take trade-ins or will that be thru one of the car web sites?
I hadn’t thought of trading in a vehicle as I presumed that was a nonstarter for DTC transactions? Unless you mean Carvana or something?

We had a recent court case here in New Mexico (Sorry the only links are behind a paywall)
https://ruidosonews.com/artesia-group-sues-to-overturn-states-ev-mandate/
But in our new building codes there is a requirement that all new residential and commercial construction has to include EV charging.
The recreation center went to court citing extra cost AKA less profits, but the judge dismissed the case saying that the building rules are non negotiable.
The case was bought by a non profit supported by various oil companies who are terrified that EV's will signal the end of their companies.
This goes hand in hand with a mandate the auto dealerships will be required to actually stock EV's, but so far have refused despite losing in court, repeatedly.

I love the "EV sales are flat" nonsense. Well if you don't stock EV's nobody can buy them so of course the sales figures are poor.

The New Mexico law is NOT an EV mandate at all. It is, however, a mandate to provide EV charging stations in new business parking lots and in homes. Given that EV automobiles are not going anywhere, and will likely continue to grow in market share, this seems like a rational law to get a head of things. It's more expensive to retrofit 240V plug in your garage that it is to have it built in at the time of construction.
Calling that an "EV Mandate" is political posturing and emotion eliciting language meant to push an agenda.

Can’t imagine Slate itself will get involved with trade-ins, not without physical dealer presence.

Exactly, new homes are required to be pre-wired for all sorts of things, refrigerators, microwaves, ranges, washers and dryers, service outlets for HVAC equipment, etc. That isn't because the appliance lobby pushed for appliance mandates - it is because most wiring errors (and associated fires) happen during retrofits and homeowner modifications. If you think there is a reasonable chance that someone will need a given appliance in a home's life, it is safer to plan for it during construction.

Did you not read the article where New Mexico has mandated that dealerships stock a certain percentage of EV's?
So they don't mandate that we can only buy EV's, the mandate is that dealerships have to stock them, giving us the choice of buying EV or ICE.

OMG the horror!!!
You’re not being forced to buy an EV.
You still have choice.

Yes and no.
You have a choice of the car you can buy, but you are only 'allowed' to buy it from a franchised dealership, so no other choice.

NM has a loophole big enough to drive a Slate through, Tribal land. State restrictions don't apply on federal land. Look up casinos in NM to get an idea where Slate could setup a dealership.

The real question I have is what style of dealership is required to get the state EV incentive, is it only franchise style dealerships or can it apply to a dude with a dealer license.

Maybe no dealership, just a tribal address, shipped in care of local tribe member?

With state incentives, you'd have to look it up. There are currently no state level incentives in California, there is a smaller local AQMD incentive, but you specifically have to buy from a local dealer.

Tesla already uses that loophole, and you have no idea how much time and money the dealers association spent to try and stop them.
