A Reddit sleuther did some analysis of people's posts so far - you seem to be right, it has very little to do with when you placed your pre-order, and a lot to do with where you live:

I'm in CO and in the "coming soon" bucket. I can see why they'd want to avoid a Jan-Mar delivery in CO (right into the middle of the coldest/snowiest season), but we have a favorable 2027 incentive, and a very EV-friendly population.

Q2 TX here, but didn't reserve until 5/10.

From the "terms" page on the Slate website:

7. Delivery Timing, Delivery Windows, and Geographic Sequencing

Your Delivery timing is determined by two factors: (1) the date and time of your original Reservation (for Reservation holders) or your Preorder (for new customers); and (2) when deliveries open for your confirmed delivery address or state of residence. Reservation holders who place a Preorder retain priority over non-reservation holders.

Delivery timing may be affected by production ramp, supply chain conditions, regulatory requirements, logistics, and other factors. Slate will communicate material changes to expected delivery timing directly to affected customers.

Slate has assigned or will assign you specific date range in which you can expect delivery (your "Delivery Window"). You may request to push your Delivery Window to a later delivery window by contacting a Slate Agent. Slate cannot accommodate requests to move a Delivery Window earlier your assigned delivery window.

Location matters. I'm looking for delivery in Nevada, and got the "Delivery Window Coming Soon" message.

This is from the Ars Technica review. I was in that cohort, and got the undefined 2027 delivery. That's looking like a very slow ramp should they need almost a year to get 1/10 of the factory's planned output shipped.

Your window was pre-selected.
If there are less orders than expected in Q1 and Q2 windows, you'll almost certainly get bumped up.

I intentionally left that unchecked. I'm as excited as anyone here but the reality of starting up new production is there *will*(not might) be problems that need sorting out. We are a sort of Guinea Pig group, I'm happy to watch a few thousand trucks go out before me.

I hear what you’re saying, but given the simplicity of this truck, and the fact that’s its an EV, I’d argue there really isn’t much to go wrong.

I just preordered and they just said 2027. I'm guessing this means I'm too far out/away for them to have an idea of when I may take delivery. I'm in TN, BTW.

I dont think so, a friend of mine who lives in the same city got Jan-mar and Im 2027. They reserved on the first day and I reserved in early june.

I think it is all when you reserved
