If I recall correctly from my childhood, we solved the seatbelt problem for the middle passenger back in 1965

1970 Chevy wagon…we bounced around in the back two seats like pinballs (and no AC!)

This would probably require too much of a redo on design, because while shoulder belt and airbag might not technically be required ...
