My wife and I were looking at a Y around June of last year. After Musk's weird acting shit. She said no way on earth we're buying ANYTHING Tesla from now on. Even pre-installed a charger at the house for it. Even sold my long holding stock last year also. Just felt wrong knowing we owned part of the company.

I don't blame you. The current administration is determined to set back the US making any progress. Big win for China.

The EV tax credit was established 17 years ago in 2008. The alternate fuel tax credit (precursor to the EV tax credit) was established in 2005. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 enacted by the previous Administration, placed numerous caveats on the EV tax credit tied to country of origin for battery manufacture, vehicle manufacturing country of origin, and mineral supply country of origin, which essentially placed a $7,500 tariff on most EVs sold in the US.

No country can compete with China because of their low labor costs, forced labor practices, and their capture of the battery minerals source of supply, which started over 15 years ago.

Bill Ford and family, on the other hand have been very good benefactors for not only Detroit but many other important things helping people if you want to do some research. Muskellunge bought into the current administration with his massive donations. So c'mon. He IS responsible for the loss of EV tax breaks even if he was too naive to know he was gonna get screwed by Project 2025.

I’m not a fan of musk and do blame his actions for much of what’s happening, but a good portion of the American people that voted for the moron in chief chose to vote the way they did regardless of Musk. All I’m saying is that most of us have bought items from and through companies run by people who have been guilty of some awful things. It’s why there’s a new boycott of some company every couple months. But, the stupidity of writing off every person who has purchased and owns a Tesla is completely stupid and represents the stupid kind of thinking that has turned America into the political cesspool it is. I blame trump and news media for enabling and promoting much of this stupid tribalism. I’m guilty of it too… I do the same thing when I see a big truck rolling down the street, I make unfair assumptions about their political leanings or affiliations.

I would not say completely stupid. No matter how innocent the buyers of Tesla were, they are not very smart now.

With the tax credit going away on 9/30, I’m canceling my Slate.

It was one thing when it was under $20K, but now it will be $27.5K when it actually comes out (probably more like $30K, but we’ll see).

I can get a Model Y today for $37.5K and it has well over double the range, can tow over 3X more, has an impressive sound system and comes with Autopilot standard.

Time to move into the future, not the past.

You won't get the towing capabilities for $37.5K. If you want towing, you'll have to drop another $1K for the Tow Package, bumping the price up to $38.5 after tax credit.

You missed my point. By putting so many restrictions on where the EVs are built, the prior Administration made most of the EV sold in the US not eligible for the tax credit. Thus increasing prices of EVs, which is the same effect as a tariff (if you believe tariffs are paid by the consumer).

As a purely financial decision, you are right. However a vehicle purchase is rarely a purely financial decision. On the financial end, this is not a necessary purchase. I have a 7+ yo Model 3 that I am more that happy with (Elon not withstanding). The Slate will be my secondary vehicle used mostly for weekend in the woods at my cabin and for household projects, hobbies, and since I love to tinker, (wait for it) "my blank Slate". Price, I will wait to see what the retail price is once it starts to roll off the line. (And US made also means a lot to me.)

Tariffs are paid by the consumer until the price of the next competitor is reached. If they go over that price they can't sell, so the seller has to pay the rest. Also the cost usually gets distribute along the supply train.
