How does the Slate turn on?

I noticed something on the slate that there isn’t a visible start button? I’m wondering if it is part of the key fob location like once you put it in it pushes a button or moves something so it starts up curious if anyone knows the answer?

And also if it is the fob that also sends a signal to the truck how reliable is that I’d prefer if the fob location had some pins or something to soft wire it in with a physical connection

The key fob has to be in proximity of the vehicle. Just like a push to start ICE.

Yah that’s what I’m thinking still weird since all I’ve know is a key or button to actually start it it just seems like aliens tech XD

Extremely reliable.

The RFID part of a key fob is passive (no battery required) and its ID is unique (tied to the specific vehicle).

The power comes from the radio signal provided by the RFID reader.

There are encryption and anti-cloning features.

I would prefer a metal key.

I believe that slot in the dash is just a convenient ‘place holder’ for the key with no functionality. I would rather just leave the key in my pocket so it’s not left behind when I leave. Most likely you will get a ‘key left behind’ alert on your app, and won’t be able to lock it. That’s how I envision it will work.

My 2008 Prius has a slot that you can push the FOB into. I have never used it because the car knows the FOB is inside the car (my pocket). I have noticed the dealership always puts it into the dash, so I take off the leather sheath I have for it before handing the FOB over.

I would expect the Slate to work in a similar fashion.

Edit: I’ve seen that the tailgate and doors accept a “traditional key.” (Another thread). I’d be pleasantly surprised if the ignition did too. One key over a FOD would lighten my keychain.

I do like the fob concepts. However, I’ve seen many a video of thieves using powered RF directional antennas+repeaters to pick up the signal of people’s FOBs in their homes.

Defense against that is a Faraday Box or a Faraday Fob Pouch.

So interesting thought, if I lost my key what’s the process for replacing it?

service center only?
Can I do it with an account ID through a tethered phone to reprogram?
Is it like my Harley where I enter a code into the dash and it will start and drive?

I know these are unanswered, probably unasked questions but thought provoking

There are physical keyholes in the doors and the tailgate so there will be a physical key supplied for those, but whether it's in the fob like Hyundai/Kia or something else is yet to be determined.
