As someone who tends to end up running late for things, I have learned that hurried driving rarely moves the arrival estimate by a meaningful amount. There's very little room for improvement, especially compared to saving time at some part of your schedule before you're on the road.

Yeah, I'd better write that down...
Anyone can test that by using GPS and looking at when you get to the destination relative to the initial estimate. Have to repeat a few times, because traffic light timing can randomly throw it off by a couple of minutes. But drive the speed limit, you get there right about when the GPS said, go 10 over, you still get there about when the GPS said, unless it's a long straight interstate drive with no lights and little traffic, where you can make up a few minutes. If it's surface streets with traffic lights going faster just means waiting longer at red lights.

I find trying to beat the "miles remaining" estimate much more satisfying! 60 seconds saved means I'd be keeping up with that car I can just make out car a ways up the road, not worth that much. Conversely, if the odometer estimates 150 miles left in the tank, and I get 170 through patient, attentive, skillful driving, that's meaningful cash in my pocket! Add the range estimate and the odometer and you can keep tabs on whether you're exceeding or failing the target.

Sorry about your hikes and delivery windows. I've observed the same disparity regarding driving efficiency. When my wife drives I can see that her left foot is on either the floor or dead pedal (she only brakes with her right foot), but I swear she must be pushing down the gas and dragging the brakes at the same time to achieve the abysmal efficiency numbers she gets. She's very smart, self-controlled, and strong-willed, so it's not a limitation of ability to apply that knowledge, it's just a choice she'd have to make for herself.
Are you sure your name isn't Kramer?

Is the Slate highest speed locked to 90mph due to the motor or the gear ratio? We have some highways in Texas with a 85mph speed limit, which means cars are whizzing past 90mph.
Air resistance squares with the speed. Give the fact that this thing has the aerodynamics of a cinder block........ well yeah....

Sounds like you need a real truck for Texas highways!
Sound choice, nothing says high speed highway prowess like a high center of gravity and big sidewall aspect tires. Please be safe and remember that natural selection is still alive and well.

Nah.. the real challenge is to drive a 600cc Kei truck on the left lane at 45mph. 😂

Seems everyone is missing the point, sounded like OP had one of two issues. Long open Texas roads that most would choose to drive fast, or the other very dangerous over congested urban city lanes that probably would want to place a little more metal between yourself and the other cars/trucks and semis.

Drove in the outer circles of Dallas in my M3 few years back and it’s crazy! During that same trip a 3 foot 2x4 jumped up from under the vehicle in front of me, hit my bumper, the hood and the window before flying over.

Not again anytime soon, and if so will have more metal around and not just plastic.

I’m in SoCal for vacation this week. I guess Slate would be ok on I5 but the lack of ACC would SUCK as the traffic snakes are real here. One arsehat hits the brakes in the left lane and then you are suddenly in a 10 minute delay on a Sunday afternoon!

I’m mentally prepared that I won’t be joining any of the metro ATL speedways with this little guy.

You reminded me of the time driving my Ram on the freeway and a 2x4 fell off the top of a moving van two lanes to my left, bounced, smashed the side mirror next to me, bounced again in the truck bed, and landed on the right shoulder. I think that tow mirror probably saved my life.
(Follow up thought… I got to thinking again about that incident and maybe having a heavy duty rubber bed mat is why that 2x4 bounced right out of my truck. That piece was decent length. When I pulled over after I caught my breath I put the dang thing in my truck on an angle and I got a 8’ bed. That moving van never even stopped. They never knew what happened.)

At what point do these places get restricted to autonomous vehicles only?

Some pickup’s custom muffler fell out of its hanger while hitting a bump going 80. I avoided the muffler and exhaust pipe, but some ball-bearing thing the size of a golf-ball hit the windshield right in front of my face. Lucky all it did was chip the windshield. Other than tire shreds, mufflers are the most common shoulder trash I see on the highway 🤦‍♂️

Speaking of mufflers dropped, I was driving my brand new 2007 Saturn Sky to Visit my son, a truck in front of me drove over and cleared a muffler in the middle of the lane, my car which is very low to the ground would have destroyed much of the front and possibly underneath. Not being use to it’s quick steering yet, I swerved to miss it, spun my car 3 times in the middle of the highway straightened back out heading the right direction. Pulled over to the side of the road until my heart slowed down and I could breathe again, no damage thankfully.
