I found what led me to believe Slate might be developing an infotainment option that has good audio quality.

About 40 minutes into the Rich Rebuilds video Eric Kyper says this:

You know, we know people are going to bring insane audio systems to this. Our accessories team is dialing up some pretty amazing things.

I took the highlighted sentence to mean amazing infotainment things, but he could have been referring to amazing accessories in general.

I’m guessing Eric was referring to plug and play capability for DIN head units.

That, and more.

They're "systems thinkers" designing a vehicle knowing that people will want to enjoy a sound system that sounds great.

Forethought vs. afterthought for a better-sounding result.

If that was completely true they would not be showing speakers mounted in the face of the dash.

Is it bad, sound wise, to put speakers facing out of the dash? My high-end desk speakers are pointing at me, so I'm confused.
Edit: to clarify, I'm genuinely curious, haven't heard this before.

It’s about the space behind the speaker that makes or breaks the sound quality. The larger the space, the better the sound. The doors are by far the better place to install speakers. That plus the sound from door speakers meets in the center of the cab. Front facing speakers direct sound to the back of the cab, not the center.

I think the disadvantage with the placement they're showing is that the driver or passenger won't hear both speakers equally the way you do with your near-field stereo desktop setup.

The driver will mostly hear the left speaker and passenger will mostly hear the right one.

If it's the space behind the speaker that matters, there is lots of space in that dash that could be customized properly a lot better than in the door.

Speakers can be "small and mighty", but it's not easy to accomplish and certainly not a given that Slate Auto will accomplish it.

An innovative company called Vanatoo makes a big-sounding small set of high-fidelity speakers with sound that belies their diminutive size, including having bass that reaches low frequencies.

These two relatively small table radios have amazing sound:

The Cambridge SoundWorks Model 88 incorporates a 4-inch woofer cone and a powered subwoofer to achieve deeper bass.

The Bose Wave Radio table radio uses a 7-foot tube folded into a maze inside the speaker to enhance bass.

I'm not saying killer sound in the dash is easy or even likely, just that it's possible.

Lots. Just....lots.
I mean, if we want to get into an audio science discussion, I'd just say that's an entire rabbit hole of an industry that we are unlikely to ever crawl back out of. Speaker size, shape, position, etc is just one tiny slice of the stuff that is involved. In the dash or not could matter a lot or almost not at all.

As an example, one of my old jobs as an auto mechanic (Pep Boys), I was told I had to stop using the bottom drawer in my roll away as a stereo housing - Apparently I was shaking the products off the walls in the main store and they could hear it clearly even over the store's overhead music system inside. It was just a medium grade sound system from a 1990s PC, so two little 2" tower speakers and a 4" sub in a plastic box. But I'd been building and tuning car stereos for my friends for the last 10 years, so I knew how to make little = BIG..... I used the drawer position to tune for the frequency I wanted to augment for any particular style of music. I'd thought the double cinderblock wall and the length of the 14 bay shop would be enough, but apparently the wall liked to carry the sound. :/ The speakers werent even out where you could see them, but you could hear them all through the shop even over the cars and air tools.

I asked Slate about adding an aftermarket radio and they said there would be a kit available to do it.
i was just going to design and 3D print my own kit for adding a radio with apple CarPlay and possibly aftermarket speakers.
And yes I am a Boomer also. 70 years old LOL
