Still drives my wife nuts that I change the rules of capitalization on the fly - never the same day to day. I explain to her that language is alive and needs to change over time to thrive and prosper.
Just remind her how much worse it could be by not using any punctuation.

So it’s motor sounds right ? Couldn’t you let’s say get into the stuff and tone that out after you get the slate not saying it would be easy but if there’s a will there’s a way or it it sometimes mechanical that causes the noise I know teslas are louder reversing then driving I was actually shocked one day I was standing out side and just heard a pound buzzing sounds and looked over to see a Tesla then they put it in drive and no sounds at all
I was hoping that Slate would come up with a unique and fun way to meet the minimum EV noise requirements…

Some EV's appear to use an unobtrusive whirring sound, it just needs to alert pedestrians to the presence of a moving vehicle so they don't step out in front of your rear bumper when you start moving and they thought the vehicle was parked and off.

White noise is effective at alerting nearby pedestrians and dissipates quickly, so it's not annoying from a distance.

Those scrappy engineers at Slate probably would just use a fan that makes some noise. That way they can get dual use out of the part.

I recently heard a strange sound in a parking lot that turned out to be a Toyota backing up. It sounded like this:

Yeah I've heard a sound similar to this from multiple different cars.

This subject is a pet peeve of mine. Until recently I kept an office in a small town in a rural county (think Mainstreet USA) with low ambient noise. And I grew up in a medium-sized metro city and lived on the weekends in New York city when my GF (now wife) lived there.

My observation is most of the noise that comes from cars is tire noise and aerodynamic noise. With any level of ambient noise in a city or even quiet small town, any car travelling 20 MPH or over makes tire and wind noise that far overcomes any level of (legal) exhaust noise from a plain jane street car. And most all ICEV exhaust at the rear of the vehicle, so any exhaust noise is heading away from a pedestrian in front of the vehicle. The whole concept that EV are too quiet and need noise generators for pedestrian safety is just completely stupid IMO

I thought the EV noise generators were primarily for blind or low-vision pedestrians.

While most modern cars aren't very loud at slow speed, electrics barely any make noise at all.

I've a few times noticed the Hyundai Ioniq pedestrian drone sound and found it pretty pleasant. Without really thinking about it I've been imagining the Slate would make that whirring noise most 80's era Fords had with sketchy power steering pumps. My '89 Aerostar was particularly loud. After all these years I guess that's just what small trucks sound like to me.

Well, that's kind of the point. The noise generation is required under 18 mph, when tire and aerodynamic noise are minimal. The sound level required is in the range of engine noise of ICE vehicles at those speeds.
If someone is driving around an EV making noise beyond that, they've probably modified the system to be louder or operate when it's not supposed to.

Well, they are going to have radiator cooling fans and AC running, but so will ICEV
EV cooling fans and AC running are surprisingly noisy.

A friend of mine noticed this before I did, and sure enough he's right.

They make more than enough noise to keep one from sneaking up on you as a pedestrian (barring pedestrian earbuds, of course).
