Thoughts on my second thoughts

Can’t really help one direction or other, but…
you mention partner, our son, so will assume mother/wife.
That would mean in my house that concerns would be shared, discussed until mutual agreement that either it is a concern that we overcome or a concern that results in a new decision. Our decision, not my decision.

Oh, it’s a joint decision. Always is. I’m the risk taker, my partner is the planner. We both are very budget conscious.
That to say, I don’t need advice, encouragement, discouragement, or otherwise. Was sharing my thought process, I am genuinely curious where the conversation goes and how people wander through their own concerns and desires.

I would simply rather not have 3 vehicles if I can help it.

This is where I struggle. My wife will never drive the Slate. I periodically take bike packing trips and that typically involves a 5-600 mile one way drive. I would like to get rid of my 2018 Model 3 though I would much rather do a long distance trip in the Model 3 than a Slate. Weekly, I refresh Carvana's offer on my Model 3. Today it is $14,400. One option is to keep the Model 3 and I could give it to our son when he graduates from Georgia Tech in spring 2028. The other is to sell the Model 3 and give him the Slate when he graduates and then get me a new Slate.

PJ, unsolicited advice from someone in a similar circumstance with a rising college Junior.

Sell the 3 when Slate arrives, bestow it on him when he successfully graduates, and you can get the AWD Slate then.

In 2 years either my 16 year old or my 20 year old gonna get my OG Slate.

(There are no life guarantees and we are not promised tomorrow, so my advice and $5 might get you a coke in the Hartsfield airport vending machine.)

Or you can sell the Model 3 at the current $14.4k offer, open an 18 month CD at 4% and you will have $15.3k when your son graduates. Additionally you’ll save on one less vehicle to insure. Put that towards a new Slate. The offer from Carvana is going to drop as more EV leases hit the market in the coming months. And you still have the MY for the long trips. 🙂

By the time preeorder came around she had voiced only two concerns, where would I park it? Told her I’d likely make room in the tractorshed for my Tundra. And about charging. She already knew about plan to add 8kw PV as she helped me get the new panels, so I explained about wiring in the Emporia charger. TBH I had expected more pushback as we had both my new Tundra and her new Ascent less than 6 months when Slate was announced. We agreed probably best to just keep Tundra for our son eventually. A few years ago we started telling him not to be overly concerned about us spending his inheritance. We would make sure he got well appreciated assets, that anything we bought we would do our best to fully appreciate. He seems OK with that 😄

You are kinder than me. I just told them that only those who care for me after 90 get inheritance. Simple. (The older ones understand that they have to make their own lives and never pin their hopes on my early demise…I’m tricky like that.)

Her concern is only longer trips. That’s all the “pushback” I got. If we keep my Equinox, she’s good. She understands my desire to digitally disconnect, and supports it. We’ve rented the Menards pickup a few times in the past year, so she gets the truck desire.
The only real pushback is that I have to have something I can do video calls with her when one of us travel. That’s a non-negotiable. 🤣

We took a day trip today in our Equinox EV. 213 miles used 47kWh of electricity 4.53 mi/kWh. EPA rated at 3.5 mi/kWh. Drove from Elizabethon Tennessee, to Mountain City Tennessee, then to Blowing Rock NC, to Wilkesboro NC, to Boone NC, back to Elizabethton then home to Johnson City. Took from 11 am this morning to 6 pm this evening. All backroads in the mountains speeds ranges from 35 to 55 mph, probably averaged about 45 mph. A typical day roadtrip for us.
Hoping we can overshoot the range estimate on the Slate by a similar margin on a similar trip. If so, the Slate is our perfect choice for Antique shopping in the area.
That will be one of the first things I try with it.

seems like exceeding the EPA rating to that extent might be unrealistic for the Slate. Your Equinox is a pretty slippery aero thing, even if those speed are modest. Did you even bother recharging on the road for this trip? I assume not, and this would be the greatest point of differentiation with the Slate....

Heck, my son may not need a car when he graduates depending on where he is going to be living. A lot of people living in the city go carless.
