I bought this little car play screen from Amazon that was suggested by someone on this forum, and I’m pretty amazed how well it works for under 50 bucks. This is not a high end solution and a good double Din would be much better but it does work pretty well.

That's pretty sweet!

There's so many ways to go here. Stuff like this has to be the reason why Slate won't even bother!

And the extra rear-facing backup camera on that little Amazon screen can be useful if you're hauling goods with the tailgate down.

With the Slate's tailgate mounted backup camera, it will be not usable in that configuration.... unless you want to see what or who you just ran over. 🧛‍♀️

Just thinking out loud about this. Does anyone really think they can safely interact with a docked phone at arm's length while driving? Say you're using for phone for maps / navigation. The small screen and buttons which are located below your line of sight with the road will likely be a challenge. Those who wear glasses for distance may find it difficult to focus on smaller items such as the phone screen approximately 2 feet away, down and to the right of the driver.

The larger sized tablet will definitely be required for things like navigation and media. Hopefully, navigating the Slate app will be seamless using the steering wheel mounted Bluetooth buttons.

Safely? No, absolutely not, but that's true of using any touchscreen. You're a safer driver while driving drunk than you are while operating a touchscreen. That's why many countries with functional regulatory bodies are mandating that critical functions in vehicles need to be operated by physical buttons.
But for media/navigation I've been using a phone since I got a smartphone in like 2008, so I'll probably manage.

I've had quadlock mounts with the phone conveniently close in my last few vehicles, and I would do the same in a slate.

Interaction phone vs tablet? I trust the majority of drivers to act accordingly
note: Said majority not all.

For the most part, you shouldn't need to interact with the screen while driving. Set destination while in park, choose playlist or stream while in park, steering wheel controls should be able to skip songs and change streaming stations. Will have to see the actual geometry of the production mounts to see if 3rd party mounts are needed, what we've seen so far seem to be 1 phone 1 size mounts.
