Slate vs. Telo

I almost feel bad for ragging on the Telo so much. In truth, I really don't hate it. If I were wealthy and had disposable money, it would cross my mind to buy a fun car like this. What I like the most is the tunnel storage. I love that they're taking wasted space and making it useful.

I listened to a year-old podcast today w/ the Telo guys saying that after their concept vehicle "went viral" as the kids say (ok, me), they were contacted by many, many companies needing fleet vehicles. These companies were all saying the same thing: that modern trucks were far too big, so big that they don't fit anywhere, in parking spaces, alleyways, breakdown lanes, parking structures (with their height restrictions), can't flip simple U-turns and so on. Also, modern trucks were far too expensive and overloaded.

I wonder how Telo feels now that the Slate has been announced. And at half the price.

The Telo guys say that their goal was to design a truck that was practical. So glass roof, capacative door handles. Then the 6 headlights. SIX! Each of those headlights is a sealed piece that requires it's own separate housing and it's own connector. That front end complexity is a huge detriment for repair and results in high insurance rates. One reason modern cars have front ends that protect the front wheels is to also protect a pedestrian from getting sucked into the wheels in an impact. The Telo looks like they designed it to do the opposite. They may as well put blades on the rims. Maybe that can be an upsell? The Telo MT1: Garden Weasel Edition.

Telo company can't decide whether they want to make a practical little truck or a tech nerd fan boi truck.
It’s a tech nerd fan boi clown car.

I think the telo will struggle to bring a good profit I believe they said there first run is 500 units and they also liked it to a side by side which is bad marketing since for that price you can get a much more capable side by side with about the same features and more protection plus no safety rating unlike the slate since telo I believe has been around longer right? I’m not mocking the design since crumple zones exist but it reminds me of me of old vw buses if you get on a head on collision that steering column is well going in you and I feel this could be very very similar with the telo even if a airbag is there it could result in more damage to the driver and passenger maybe even fatalities because of this design and I don’t trust that guy in the video jay Leno is fine but something about this demure give me creeps but idk why people get actually mad over these things it’s something new both the telo and slate I think the slate with the backing will last but may struggle early on but once the growing pains are done it should last quite some many many years and the telo might succeed in the short term but long term I don’t think it will last with the design and function it’s like every one else planed obsolescence while slate even though a ev has change ability and uses common and widely available parts from the ground up so even if god forbid they go out there will still be replacement parts for well ever at this time

Oh my God, please use just a tiny bit of punctuation, at least a period here and there.

Years ago had a similar poster on a different forum. Wonder if same guy? Anyway when people complained he defended his laziness in some absurd manner. Partially absurd in that it was posted in same unreadable manner. We put him on ignore. Guess he went away. I tend to just give up after a few lines. Most of our brains are trained to read on until we see punctuation, complete the thought, move on.

I don't wanna hate on the Telo. I'm not the target customer and that's just fine. I feel like more Ev makers, and more choices can only be better for us all.

I've also noticed that there are much more "influencer" types making in person videos about the Telo MT1 than they are with Slate. That alone is a bad sign and kind of suggests the truck is more vaporware than real.

Also, I can't help but point out how uncreatively the Telo is named. It's like they copied Rivian's naming scheme and used M instead of R.

That's exactly what they did, but in one of the vids they kind of explained how they arrived at "MT". I think the M stands for "Mini". I think we can all be reasonably certain that expecting there to be a number after "1" is wishful thinking at best.

Nah, 1 as in 1st try, not 1 as #1, best

I guess that makes sense, but it's still not that creative especially when it follows an alphanumeric naming convention so close to another EV truck.

I haven't watched enough EV test drive videos to know, but this Telo sounds bad. Lots of loud motor whine and road noise.

Jay: "Buttons. Screens."
Telo Guy: "We, uh, we... A...combination of screens and buttons. Yeah, that's the ticket."

I'm somewhat baffled that Jay Leno is still alive. Or is that a puppet? Or a Tesla bot?

And, yes, Doug Demuro. I didn't know who he was before a month ago. I still remember his reaction to the Slate Truck. He literally seemed angry that it existed. Insists EVERYBODY wants BIG and four doors and tech and screens and features up the wazoo and we're all towing boats or campers. He spends the whole video SNIFFING LOUDLY and tending to his nose like a cokehead, then finishes the video with an ad selling financial assistance for people with crushing debt.

I'm a fan of Doug but didn't agree with his take but I understand why he has it. The reason we like the Slate Truck is because it goes against the grain of the current automotive market. But that's why it's also a big risk, since people can say one thing on social media about what they want which is what they have been calling for but it's another to put your money where your mouth is and actually follow through.
