Honestly, hesitant to post this since you can't really even call it competition yet since they don't even have a prototype yet just a concept. But bringing it up since the concept is similar to slate. Their plan is to make an Electric AWD Kit Car Pick Up Truck. They are basing it off the Suzuki Carry Kei Car to be affordable to the masses. Everything will be open source to be fully customizable. Apparently originally the project was to be based off the Ford Bronco but they have since switched over to a Kei Car Concept. Really, shows how big of a splash Slate has made in the automotive industry. They are making it a kit car since they feel like it would require much less capital to develop and get approved for road use. Until they have a prototype and an actual team to build it you can't really compare it. It's also a kit car not a fully built pickup truck. But just found out about this and wanted to share here since the concept feels very Slate inspired.

Doubtful I’ll ever see it, but interesting nonetheless.
i do have to wonder why there isn’t a Japanese made version.

BEV’s are a very small market in Japan so there isn’t much interest in making them right now. Electric Kei Vans are seemingly started to be looked at so if those are successful we might see them one day.

Looks like it won't likely be a competitor, going to be small scale, and a "kit car" so they will likely ship you a mostly assembled truck, you have to finish it, and do a pile of paperwork to get it street legal. I saw mention of it taking someone 2 years to get a kit car registered. This gets around needing all the safety features and crash testing etc that most vehicles need to have.

I wouldn’t mind if it had the sides of the bed fold down or be able to remove them from ish the slate could do that but sadly no well unless some made man makes a kit that both reinforce the parts needed and cuts the stuff on the sides off hmmmmm

This reminds me of the minivan which was sold by Cushman in the 1990s. It was available in gas or electric as I recall and seemed to be a rebadged Kei van. It was not road legal but marketed to colleges etc. for use in transporting people around campuses.

I cancelled my slate deposit and looking forward to this instead. I like commercial electric vehicles over consumer grade so it was a no brainer for me. I totally understand how someone else would feel the opposite with slate being better for consumer perspective especially with all the 3d printed add ons. The only thing that bothered me was not having electric windows. Coming from Land Cruisers I like super beefy axles and body on frame construction. I was also tad biased as I always wanted a Kei Truck EV and was about to import one from China. I was having trouble finding one that can go above 35mph, preferably 85mph for the highway.

I really wouldn’t have cancelled your deposit for this honestly, Slate is in a very good spot to make it to market and on time. This isn’t even close to making it to production yet.

New 2024 RAM Promaster EVs are going for less than $20k (currently $70k discount) now in 2025, cheaper than slate with more range and alot more features. I signed up with Slate as I felt they were going for under $25k vs $90k for Ford/Mercedes/Ram Vans. I like commercial EV Vans under $20k more than Slate. EVs are going way down in price even though I am the biggest fan. I hope Slate will make it but I don't think they will. They need to steal market share from Rivian which isn't looking likely with R3 coming same time. I am strong fan of CHEAP EVs, I feel like the whole reason EVs are not taking off is over price. If China can offer EVs for $5-8k we should be able to get under $20k.

Cheapest 2024 Pro Master EV I see is 60K and for me it’s also not pickup truck. Rivian R3 is not confirmed to be launching in 2027, we don’t know the pricing, and again it’s not a pickup truck. Finally as a general rule you can’t take the price of a vehicle in one market convert to usd and assume that will be the price here. A Chevy in Brazil is much cheaper than a Chevy in the US (and a BYD is considered a brand for the wealthy in that country according to my Brazilian friends).

if Chinese EVs were sold here they would they would be much more expensive than in China especially considering that they are looking to make a profit due to the unsustainable price war in their home market. They also need to adjust their products for US Standards which raises the price as in other markets like the UK for example. Not to mention if they were sold here they would either be built here or be tariffed to ensure fair competition. But even without tariffs the price isn’t as low as people think they would be as can be seen with the price of Chinese EVs in markets like Australia.

Slate is a made in America Truck made with mostly American sourced parts. Chinese EVs that are made in China are in a market the min wage is at most about $4 but averages around $2-3. Where EVs have large incentives by the government. As well as a bunch of other factors that makes it cheaper to build a vehicle in China than the US. If Slate was built in China it would be much cheaper the same way any vehicle that’s built in China and sold on the Chinese market is much cheaper than in the US. But Slate isn’t built in China and Chinese EVs aren’t sold in here. So that point doesn’t matter.

If Slate launches at a true mid-20K price point after destination they will be the cheapest pickup on the market in General and possibly the Cheapest BEV in General depending on what price point they come in at. In a market where the Average price of a new Vehicle is 50K they can be competitive at that price point.

Slate isn't really competing with any EV truck that is on the market. They run $52k-100k if you can find a base model.
It looks like as of July, 2025 sales of Rivian R1T were at 3479, at ~$78k base price
Silverado EV 5439 at $73k+
Cybertruck 10,712 at$72k+
F150 lightning 13,029 $54k+

If the slate does come in at mid 20s, it will be half or less than the price of any other EV truck, and it's going for a whole different market. It's visually going to look like a mini truck compared to those monsters, and lots of people will go for it who can't afford those monsters.

Slate is planning 150k trucks a year, with the plant they are building, I'm hopeful they can ramp up to that relatively quickly, and sell them as fast as they can build, and then start building more plants.

That's a concept and nothing more, I'd have at least left the deposit in, because that concept may disappear entirely before you'd have even had to make a decision in around a year.
Telo at least has built A prototype, but they are far from production, and plan on slow production.

I would classify Mutiny in the same category as Ironwood. Nothing more than a poorly executed concept, or possibly a non-working mockup that will never materialize. I think when you begin to see Slates on the road, you may regret cancelling your reservation. Good luck.

For me I prefer Vans over pickups, I fully understand that people who prefer pickups will prefer Slate. From autotrader, all new:
