Yeah for sure, Toyota has been "a year away" from solid state since 2012. As far as my posts in this thread, I'm trying to weed out the click bait and low grade tech sites and keep it more reality based, or at least interesting to me.

Thanks for posting this thread. I recently invested in a battery optimizing tech start-up. I’m enjoying learning about what is possible vs what’s on the market, and the wide gap between the two. Tomorrow’s innovation is sitting in someone’s garage workbench, today. it certainly is an interesting field that’s evolving rapidly.

I’ve gone thru this with home solar batteries. Started with 12v deep cycle lead acid, but now have 48v LiFePO which are totally hands off, maintenance free. Exciting.

The recent unveiling of Tesla's new battery has sent shockwaves throughout the electric vehicle industry, and for good reason. The innovative cell design of the 4680 battery is a significant breakthrough in energy storage, allowing for faster charging and a substantial reduction in battery cost.

Flag on the play; uncritically reporting things vaguely mentioned in a tesla shareholder meeting as fact in the year of our lord 2026

You donut believe?
Roadster 2.0 will be the first to finally get the GOOD 4680s. It'll be delivered via 4 Optimus robots carrying it.

ProTip for this thread:

Any story about battery technology should be taken with a big grain of rock salt.

I though everybody here already knew that, but apparently not.
Agree!
It's mostly vaporware and more like ongoing research.

Can you imagine having a perfect EV battery made of nuclear materials that lasts over 50 years?

BetaVoltaic makes nuclear decay batteries but since they are radioactive, it might not work well with people sitting on top of them ?

I work in the energy storage industry and one of our sayings is "There are liars, damned liars, and battery suppliers". You can't trust any announcement or spec sheet until you have a test unit in hand.

Those do exist, but the radiation type is easily shielded, energy density would be the issue, they are drastically lower than what is used in a car. They can run low powered stuff for decades with no charging though. Even if you could theoretically scale to enough power for a car, heat management would be an issue, they basically are like an always on generator, that can't be turned off.
