Just looking back at my youth and VW dune buggy kits... Assuming Slate makes it to market... Even if Slate goes bankrupt after producing "n" vehicles... I could see kit car body shops popping up online, where you can just buy bolt in panels that convert your Slate truck into all kinds of funky creations.

Back in the day, and I mean, mid-last-century, you could open a car magazine (those used to be a bound paper thing that came in the mail, kids), and in the back pages would be a bunch of advertisements to send in $200 to $400 and get a dune buggy kit.

So you'd take your VW bug, rip it apart, attach the body kit, and voila, you'd have a dune buggy. Or a Mercedes front end. They were endlessly amusing and fun.

Yea, if Slate reaches volume production, it kiind of screams for body kits. Kind of a bummer that Slate isn't being built on a non-unibody frame with a detachable bed. Because then it would truly be endlessly flexible.

ps: Anybody remember the ads where you could drop $200 and get an entire WWII surplus Jeep packed in cosmoline?
It truly does scream for body kits, and burnouts…

i truly hope they decide to work with me on this one

How many full body kits would you need to sell to break even, or have the project at least pay for itself?
Likely a lot, but i plan on doing it for myself either way. Hopefully people are interested though

I'm sure there will immediately be people out there with Slate trucks that have "carbon fiber" wraps
Much easier and lower cost by several orders of magnitude. If done correctly, it will be hard to tell the difference between a carbon fiber wrap and the real thing. They will both pass the tactile "tap test." :like:

While it is easier and cheaper, definitely not what i want to do. Going for a very authentic carbon fiber slate

Imagine JC Whitney catalogs still existing in the era of Slate pickups, what wild stuff would they be selling for it? I hope the Slate gets a strong owners base with full customization in mind and we start seeing some wild builds right off the bat:

You might want to consider creating a poll on this forum to gage interest in carbon fiber body panels. Also, have you thought about custom CF accents, e.g. mirror caps, lip spoilers for the tailgate and roof, fender flares, grill surrounds, etc. These are items that would catch my attention and help my blank Slate stand out from the others.

Fender Flares are definitely one of those go-to items that a ton of people put on trucks, I bet people would buy a bunch of those!

The main reason I'm cheering for the Slate is the idea of getting it into the hands of creative young people. I think it will be endlessly entertaining to see what they do with it.

Our roads could use something more entertaining than an endless succession of CUV/SUV jellybeans in shades of gray and white.

The company still exists, so it's only a matter of time until you'll be able to absolutely cover a Slate in the ugliest stick-on chrome accessories you've ever seen.
