I’m curious about the function of the rear window; does it open independently of the tailgate? I’m thinking of old school station wagons or pickup camper shells where you can just open the window without opening the tailgate.

Are you talking about the slant back SUV? I have tried to find a picture of that one with the glass open, and have not seen one. It should open, but I don't see how it's hinged. It might open the same as the other one. The other style uses the same window as the pickup, but the slant back shows a taller window.

One of their shorts shows it open, I'll try to find it. If I remember it didn't show how to lock it closed which is something I wonder about.

One of the videos of the square back just confused the issue. They opened the tailgate then the window, then closed the tailgate before the window if I recall correctly. The only conclusion to be drawn was that it was non-final hardware, and we don't know which piece is on the outside.

Yes it opens the Slate commercial with the smelly hockey bag. I think they are still in the design stage on the slant back top. Not many pictures of it. That is the one I wanted, without back seats and roll bar. I might have to go aftermarket, Leer makes tops to fit almost every truck.

I wonder if the back glass in the SUV style will open like my 07 Jeep Liberty. Tailgate closes first and glass latches down to that. To open, the glass unlatches when you pull the tailgate handle.

I believe all my previous tops followed that.

The problem is Slate has indicated for the square back at least that the "halo" rear of the cab transfers to the rear of the SUV top. The cab rear glass has no latch mechanism whatsoever based on all the images thus far posted by Slate and people who have attended Slate reveal events and posted pics. It makes sense that the cab rear glass has no latch because it is safe to assume it is fixed in place and does not swing open. So, the problem lies with if the glass is reused, how will it be locked with the SUV kit. Adding a latch mechanism either means the latch hardware will be glued to the glass, or the glass will need to be drilled to affix the latch hardware to the glass. Or the tailgate top rail will be modified (or is already designed) to lock the glass in-place when the tailgate is closed, which makes the most sense. The Smelly Hocky Bag video just confused the issue.

I keep watching this video clip for answers. It appears you are correct, in the standard 2 seat pickup, the rear glass is fixed in place. What looks like hinges are actually covers for fasteners to secure the glass to the roof halo section, not functional hinges. When you install the SUV kit, you swap out the bolts for actual hinges. The lip on the bottom of the glass allows it to be locked in place with the tailgate. So, no latch is needed. Just a lot of fingerprints on your rear glass every time you flip it open or closed.

That they did which shows the window opens independent of the tail gate
And that's one neat trick sealing the window to the tailgate when that's done
Guaranteed leak in the rain/car wash.

I used to have a car (only new car I ever bought) Every week I took a shower as it went through the automatic car wash.. Finally the service manager taught me how to fix it.

After that. No leaks.
(You take two strong arms ending in one strong hand each and bend the door... Yup that's how he and I later did it .)
