Yup. Tools, rescue equipment, tow bands, etc. stuff that isn’t accessed very often. Other stuff is in passenger seat(s) or bed.
I'll keep it empty so I can use it for groceries, just like a trunk I guess.

I dont live on a farm or other desolate place and dont really need tools permanently in my cars.
I thought about a spare too but cant remember last time I used one.

I live in a metro area…but you can take the boy off the farm but not the farm off the boy? Besides, I can’t save any lives without some of my gear.

Love it Adele, and agree with you regarding definition, but that said, it would be very entertaining to a good number of us to see a handful of Gen Z actually living as we did 60 years ago, no internet, no cell phones, no instant most anything, no fast food. Not finding fault or anything, but vinyl records and ai don’t begin to define the difference. And I always read your posts. Appreciate your Slate.

probably should add, heck doubt I could go back
True, I think it's more that we romanticize "analog" aesthetics.
  • Hence everyone's into vinyl records, because "it's good to physically own your music" even though CDs are the objectively superior physical medium.
  • Hence people buy retro "dumb" phones because "I want to detox from social media", because just deleting/blocking social media doesn't look as sexy.
But that's kind of what I'm getting at. Crank windows are the perfect retro-cool novelty for our generation, just that "analog" aesthetic without really sacrificing convenience. I'm attracted to it not least because I know all my friends are going to think it's cool. I'm not immune to this phenomenon lol.

Unless it's a TikTok dance video with the manual text flashing one word at a time on the screen, I fear that RTFM champions are a dying breed.
ChatGPT will be reading the manual, then the young'ns can ask it the questions... I might just do it so I have someone to argue with about what the truck is capable of. Nah-uh ChatGPT, that's not what the passage means!

I absolutely hope younger people take this up and get past the fear of stuff like crank windows.
I'm weird, but having never been in a vehicle with crank windows, they're mostly a novelty. I think young people are less afraid than some expect; they may not have an opinion at all.

There may be some concern about the experience or certain situations. In my head, it feels like it could feel tedious if I have to turn it a lot of times. But then, how many times will I actually be turning it in practice? The Autopian says 6 to roll it down completely, while noting older crank windows might've opened in 3.5 turns.
But do I need to lower it fully? The main situation I can think of opening the window offhand is picking up a drive-thru order, and I don't think I need to fully retract the window to do that. Etc.

Yeah, I'm a proponent of "using technology better"...owning your music is awesome, but I mean digital files. Hard drives are an even better physical medium.
I want to eventually get away from Android (and OneUI, because Samsung), but probably to a Linux phone (that should run Android apps, anyways). No evil UX design or built-in spying, technology that I control instead of technology that controls me, etc.

I think even things like social media recomender "algorithms" (it's actually a kind of AI (not generative), more or less always has been) might do more good than harm if they're designed for users rather than against them. It's come out in court documents that those systems are often designed to know what you want and NOT show you (until you scroll a while). It's literally based on casinos (as are 90% of UX design choices, it seems).

I mean, that's not an Instagram aesthetic or anything (not that I'd know), but I think it's a growing idea that will only continue to accelerate as things like generative AI become more odious and forced. For adopting "free" technology, there are few better motivators than spite.

...alright, that was a bit much, but you can't say it doesn't fit the thread title "how times change".
As a more-on-topic aside, I want to emphasize my belief that community will be key to Slate's success (and full potential) in ways it isn't for other automakers.

People are going to rely on either Slate's official support or community support for things they might've gone to dealerships for, even if they're ultimately referred to a mechanic. As others have said, it will likely be a first EV for many (if not a first car, comma and period). Many add-on features are going to be community projects, or aftermarket parts people will want recommendations on.

Camera circle in the screen is a dealbreaker and I'm so over "Swiss privacy" with-ah, Proton partnership. Also, "software as a service" focus in "About", their OS seems to have some kind of subscription, and at least one link on the site has given me an SSL certificate warning. Hard pass, I do not recommend.

I wasn't gonna bother earlier, but many of us need a permenant home for things that do have value, but do not need climate control, and we don't even live on farms. I use a variety of tools, professionally. I fix shit, I install shit. Meters, scopes, crimpers, etc. Amazingly, I use them in the city ;)

I said it when CD’s were invented, and I’ll say it again. I don’t care how many digital blocks you break a sine wave into, it will still not approach a true analog signal. That is what the hipsters describe as “warm.”

People who hear pops and crackles have scratched albums or don’t properly remove the static charge before playing.

Don’t mean to rant at you, adele, but this is the one hill I will die on 😜
