I think this works great for the scooters where you roll up pop out your battery and pop in a new one, especially for apartment dwellers or even places where there's not the best electricity.

For cars I think it's just too much infrastructure to maintain, and dc fast charging is catching up, especially in China, Zeekr can charge from 10-80% in like 10 minutes, and that gets you about 180 miles, and as mentioned it's much easier to implement fast charging than battery swapping. Just look at Tesla's off grid site in Lost Hills, CA, solar and battery powered supercharging.

Sandy Munro had some thoughts on battery swapping years ago. He pointed out that anything mechanical breaks. It is not if, it's when. He also hates fasteners, which are the #1 failure points in automotive. Battery swapping is a lot of fasteners and moving parts.

Now if you really want to go Buck Rogers, put a 10KW battery in every vehice and equip our roads for inductive charging. Remember, the whole road doesn't need to be refitted. Just little sections here and there. Automatic billing. You just drive and your car is recharged. Test roads have already been done.

Remember I said Buck Rogers. Modern Americans would never go for this, because it would involve the insane notion of working together for the common good. Very unAmerican. Canadians, now they might do it.

That sounds really expensive for road construction and maintenance. And an energy efficiency issue to boot.

A lot of EV issues could be solved if we just had a "Peoples Car"... ;)

Under the battery swapping model, manufacturers would no longer need to provide an 8 year/ 100k mile + warranty. This could conceivably lower the initial price of the vehicle, since the battery is THE most expensive component which will inevitably degrade over time.

Also, any battery degradation normally occurring on older EVs would be ‘absorbed’ by the battery charging/ swapping stations. Poorly performing batteries would automatically be weeded out of circulation. So in theory your EV could perform like new, for as long as you desire to keep it.

The ability to swap batteries sounds like something that is worth much more than a having a fixed battery with warranty. It is essentially life-time warranty, i.e., healthy battery for as long as the car runs and the old one doesn't have to be dead by a certain standard (to qualify for warranty coverage). Can the manufacturers afford this? 😳
