I'm hoping find a way to strap a spare tire to the bed with 3 mounting points. I don't want the rear bumper thing. If I need the whole bed for something I'll remove the spare. I'll use a small hydraulic jack kept in the frunk or cab.
I think an aero chase rack could be sweet. An angled rear tire mount in the bed would be a bit ridiculous (real off-roaders would say you need 2 if you're going to be a prerunner for the Baja 1000, but a Slate needs a lot more than a second spare tire to do that). Regardless, it could be a fun look:

Yes, I know the angles are wrong and the rim is wrong and the tire is wrong, but I generally hate AI and don't have the skills or time to do this in Gimp. You get the idea.

Something like this could do the job, with a little fab work to adjust mounting points?

possibly upright, against the exterior rear of the cab? maybe something as simple as a rachet strap arrangement? would leave more of the bed floor available, as well.
That is where a lot of pickups used to have them before they started storing them under the bed in front of the bumper. On step sides they bolted them outside the bed.

I'll probably make something like this for longer trips where I want a spare. Anywhere within AAA range, I probably won't bother.

As long as you have 3 or 4 hours to spare. That’s how long it took them to get to me the last time. So I canceled my membership.

My last one was like a 6 hour affair, lol. Someone took the mirror off the tow truck while it was getting me, and we had to wait to file a police report.

We still have AAA. I was in a minor accident last year (rear ended) and on a crazy highway with a skinny left shoulder against the crash wall. It was extremely dangerous. My car was disabled because I found out later the battery got jostled and plates shifted. Weird. Anyway, the cop said do you want us to call a tow or will you handle it. I already tried to call AAA and couldn't get through. So I told the cop get me a tow, this is unsafe.

He calls, and I was inside looking for something and I feel a bump. It was 2 minutes after he called and a tow truck backed up (like a repo man) and had me on his hanger. I'm like, WTF? Some of those guys literally run the highway waiting for the call. I accepted the tow at any cost because I wanted out. It was a ridiculous $375, but I submitted it to the other guys insurance and they paid.

The wife still wants AAA. I'm not sure it is worth it. No way would they have gotten me out of that danger. I told her I honestly didn't care about the ridiculous tow charge if I had to pay because it was a life saver.

Now as to whether that guy had dollies for Slate is unknown. I had undriven rear wheels.

Got to be careful of those guys that just show up, many are scammers or a car thief. Always get their lD, take a picture of the truck, driver and license tag. Better to be safe than sorry.

Cop said he was an approved tow company, but yeah, they seemed sketchy. I had him drop the vehicle to my home. We had a nice chat and joked about how it seemed like a repo job, was he experienced? He said he did repos in the past but it was too dangerous. His experience showed.

Your point is well taken. If you are just broken down alone, don't bother with any old guy who shows up.

I can survive without AAA. I can change a tire in 20 minutes.

So at least, for the limited warranty period, I believe roadside assist is included, ya? Now I have no clue how helpful that specifically is for a blowntire situation, I've never bat-signaled for anything like that.

and of course, YMMV on responsiveness...

Many car warranties state the tires warrantied by the tire manufacturer.

I was merely referring to the "4 YEARS/50,000 Miles of Roadside Assistance" included (which aligns with the warranty period), in terms of not carrying a spare tire. I've only had 1 tire issue in 40 years (self-managed w/o spare swap), so I have no idea what the expected norms are.
