With the bed length at 5 feet the tail gate of the bed seems to be very close to the wheel wells. What would prevent the bed from being extended another 4 inches or more like the Toyota Long Bed?

Probably money, they made the bed as short as they could while maintaining what a customer might find acceptable.

Utility aside, a regular cab short bed looks better than a regular cab long bed.
I know that's generally the consensus, but I've always preferred reg cab long bed. Which works for me, as my '68 C10 with a long bed was much cheaper and in much better shape than the short bed trucks in my area.

I'm sure a lot of thoughtful consideration went into choosing the bed length. Without a doubt longer lengths were considered.

Personally I'd prefer an extended cab and would trade away some bed length to have it. They didn't do that either.

I did hear in the grape vine (take with a grain of salt) they they are trying to make the wheel arches in the bed smaller so that the sheet of ply wood will sit flat in the bed lol if you notice the pics of the wood in the bed they did a little Houdini to put it above the wheel arches. I do hope that is the case that slate makes it on the bed but not the end of the world for me if it’s above I usually wonky get 5 sheets anyway I don’t normally fill the bed to the brim

I would prefer a long bed for the utility. IIRC my old Toyota mini truck long bed was 7' and that seemed like a good length. If they are successful, this is probably a likely variation. But I don't expect it soon.
