With the bed length at 5 feet the tail gate of the bed seems to be very close to the wheel wells. What would prevent the bed from being extended another 4 inches or more like the Toyota Long Bed?

Probably money, they made the bed as short as they could while maintaining what a customer might find acceptable.

Utility aside, a regular cab short bed looks better than a regular cab long bed.
I know that's generally the consensus, but I've always preferred reg cab long bed. Which works for me, as my '68 C10 with a long bed was much cheaper and in much better shape than the short bed trucks in my area.

I'm sure a lot of thoughtful consideration went into choosing the bed length. Without a doubt longer lengths were considered.

Personally I'd prefer an extended cab and would trade away some bed length to have it. They didn't do that either.

I did hear in the grape vine (take with a grain of salt) they they are trying to make the wheel arches in the bed smaller so that the sheet of ply wood will sit flat in the bed lol if you notice the pics of the wood in the bed they did a little Houdini to put it above the wheel arches. I do hope that is the case that slate makes it on the bed but not the end of the world for me if it’s above I usually wonky get 5 sheets anyway I don’t normally fill the bed to the brim

I would prefer a long bed for the utility. IIRC my old Toyota mini truck long bed was 7' and that seemed like a good length. If they are successful, this is probably a likely variation. But I don't expect it soon.

Actually, I don’t think I would consider this extension of the bed as being a long bed. Looking at the bed profile, that rear quarter after the wheel well is unusually short. I wanted to know why that quarter wasn’t extended to give the bed a few more inches of length.
At this point in time, my question is purely academic. Soft and hard tooled production processes for the bed, frame and for the.SUV kits would also have to be modified. Perhaps it’s something to be considered in later versions.

Although a long bed offers more utility, I’ve always preferred the look of a short bed. I’ll leave the tailgate down and tie things in securely when I need extra length.

I would think if it’s going to get longer 6’ is max for a truck of this size. Any longer and we lose the proportions that make it look like it does.

I always say 6' is the perfect length. It's short enough that it looks good and doesn't add too much length. But if you put the tailgate down you can put 4x8 sheets without it hanging past the tailgate.

There’s a pass through hatch on the front bulkhead if you need to carry some longer 2x4’s in the bed. I plan to cut some boards to fit it the side channels to allow for plywood to fit above the wheel wells. With straps of course.

I always have liked longbeds over shorties but the buyer consensus, around here at least, is 2-door shortbeds are the go-to for commuter pickups. I see a ton of (now discontinued) Ram 1500 and F150 Sports in that configuration:

At least Ford / Chevrolet still lets you get one, base 2WD V8 starting at $43,000 if you want non-steel wheels. Not far off a base Bronco. Or a 2WD turbo-four base Chevrolet. I see a lot of both all dolled up with accessories.

I’ve always liked standard cab with a long bed. It just looks right to me, proportion-wise
