I was thinking a bit about a bed cover on the Slate, and assuming the cover is somewhat watertight, was wondering how hot it would get under the cover, and whether there would be other ventilation.

Or if water got it while the cover was open, if it could drain out, other than by going up hill, and assuming that the tailgate isn't totally water tight.

Water will drain. Don't worry about it.

In the things I have seen the tailgate is most definitely not air/water tight. Production models may have additional seals along the hinge line but , as @007 says, not a concern

There is a pretty good gap between the bottom of the tailgate and the bed on the prototypes from what has been reported.

Pretty sure it will need to be for the SUV versions though. May come with a tailgate seal when you get the SUV kit.

There's a big gap at the rear of the bed, where the tailgate attaches.

Unfortunately, the forum header picture cycles through a few including the OLD design of the bed footwell. It looks like there are about 5 ways to cause leaks. Probably true, so changes were made.

No, the question was what happens when water gets into the bed, in spite of getting a bed cover that doesn't leak, because sometimes you have to open the cover while it is raining.

Of course, what you thought the question was is also interesting.
