What if you ordered 2. Do you then have to buy them the same time?
Do you have 1 or 2 reservation numbers? Possible if same priority when preorder. conversion announced but not required. Just execute on 1 let other ride I suspect.

First one for me. Second one for my daughter around Christmas time. Yes I have two res #'s. I would hate to be kicked back to the second being 18+ months from now.

At this point likely come down to date of reservation and location. Have you asked Slate?

Conversely, brains are funny things and the sunk cost fallacy is strong.

Putting up a refundable $50 is easy, spending $250 is small enough for a lot of people to risk even sight unseen, but come December when it's time to either throw away the $300 you're already in for or sign on the dotted line for another ~$25k, a lot of people will be persuaded by the fact that they already have that reservation in.
You're exactly right, here. There's a good deal of psychology in much of Slate's approach, and TBH I'm not put off by it. It's not terribly manipulative, just guidance to get this product to market, as favorably as possible.

There is a long road ahead of us, some of us will be whining, groaning, and throwing tantrums. 😂 I love that there will be enough contents on this forum to keep me entertained.
If I'm totally honest, the release and the delivery of my new Slate is giving me something to really look forward to, like the thought of going on a vacation, or a long-promised reward. In my mind, it's kind of a feature, not a glitch.

I'm also really looking forward to getting more tangible data, and seeing what the 3rd party accessory market does with that data. (I need a custom-fit solar, locking tonneau cover.)

I'm assuming that after the 30 day hold closes, if there are any available slots in the first "window" left, they will offer them to people in the second window that might want an earlier slot.
I'm sure Slate has put a significant amount of research into estimating a conversion rate and will set up the windows accordingly. I would expect the delivery windows to be relatively wide (at least 90 days) and with some overlap. So if the 30-day pre-order closes with a window underfilled, it just means the deliveries in the next window will start closer to the beginning of the window. Much easier to do it that way than deal with a large amount of order shuffling.

I wonder what I should do if I can't really buy until about 4 years from now?

Just wait, there should be no long wait list by then. After four years we will all find out how Slate sales are going, success or flop.

If you have a reservation, cancel it and get it refunded. My guess is that Slate will automatically cancel and refund all unused reservations once they close the pre-order process and transition to a regular first-come-first-served ordering process - might as well get your $50 back now.

Four years from now you'll simply go through the normal ordering process when you're actually ready to buy. By that time you'll be able to see (probably accurate to within days) how long it takes from order to delivery and you'll just place your order far enough in advance to hit your desired delivery date.
