Removing Doors

I’m interested in removing the doors from time to time, in pickup form and maybe open air, I’ll need to find a way to put a side mirror on the drivers side, it appears in Minnesota I probably won’t need side mirrors but would feel better with a drivers side

I found this image here on the forum but it's from last year.

If they still work like that, when you take the bolt out, the hinge on the truck will have a hole in it. Do what I do with my Jeep, get a Harley mirror and stick it in that hole.

A mirror with shorter threads might be better for the Slate but you get the idea.

On my Jeep wrangler, I used the largest bicycle bar-end mirrors I could find. Required a bit of modification to fit into the hinge mounting, but using the small mirrors let me store them in the center console.

I have a few different dash cams, 3 actually. They all work well. I have one with a forward and rear facing camera. That one paid for itself and the others in a recent minor rear-end accident. It was in my Honda Odyssey. Even though the rear view was far back, you could see the car impact me, and my head snap back, while also seeing what I did up front. I plan on moving this one to the Slate.

No, I didn't win a $1M award. Ha ha, I got $250 for future doctor visits. I was fine with that. It was minor and wanted this behind me. I felt fine after a few weeks when we settled, and I feel fine today.

My other vehicle has a front and rear facing dashcam. In this case you don't see the driver. Those are good too, but I have to admit, when I was arguing with the adverse party's adjuster, seeing my head bang back made it easier to come to a resolution.

Thanks. Last year. I've since avoided left lanes in urban areas. Sometimes traffic slows and people in the left lane assume it won't. Well it does. It did $1100 damage (new bumper) to the vehicle, and the injury settlement was for my one doctor visit and future visit. The "future" doctor visits didn't happen and covered my dash cam and a dinner for my hassle. Every accident doesn't have to be a spectacle with lawyers, but unfortunately our society has learned that if you know the right way, you can get a payday.

I'm amazed I found a pic; the best I have of it circa 2008 - LOL. Wish I had a closeup to show the mounting detail. I did the hack some time back in the late 1990's. We were at the beach and took the doors off. I was worried one of Delaware's finest would pull me over, so I went to a bike shop in town and bought the biggest mirrors they had. Then to a hardware store and bought a hacksaw blade and two long machine screws and wing nuts (a serious in-the-field hack truly - LOL). I cut up the bar-end mounts. Some time later I cut bushings on a lathe at work so the mount fit in the hinge tighter. Worked great.

Well, I do live in Virginia...

The YJ Wrangler lets you remove the doors and they'd fit in the back. I kept a 12MM wrench and the mirrors in the center console, so anytime we saw fit to pull the doors, it was a 5-minute change. The Bronco I now have... not so much.

I'm thinking for many of us here on the forum, any of the Slate accessory mods are not going to be too difficult for us. I wish I was buying the SUV just so I could build the kit. It's like assembling a real-size Revell model kit. LOL.
