I have requested the option for me to pickup the truck at the Indiana factory to drive home to Minnesota!

Likely wouldn't save you anything, if there is a destination fee, those are by law "normalized" so everyone pays the same.

I did this (sorta) for my first Tesla back in 2019. The car I wanted was in Chicago, and Tesla wanted $1k to ship it to the service center nearby. I decided to fly out to Chicago and drive it back. I probably only saved a few hundred bucks between the flight, hotel, meals, and supercharging, but it was a great experience.

If you're driving back to MN, I hope you get the extended battery!

I'm thinking of the adventure of doing it!
I had that thought too but I gave it up. I'd drive it to Iowa. I have no EV experience so it would be a sink or swim adventure for me. It might be a good adventure for you if you can get the truck.

I wonder how you get temporary plates? I imagine that varies from state to state. I mean lots of people buy cars from out of state dealers. So it must be doable.

If you get the 150 mile battery, that will be a lot of charging stops with a slow charger system. But it would make a great YouTube video. Especially if you do it in winter weather. See the TFL horror video when they picked up a VW ID Buzz in the winter and drove it back to Colorado from PA, and the charging stations were mostly broken or slow. Lots of cursing bleeped out iin that video. Lots of fun to watch.

Seriously, if you're able to do this, you should do a video and post it here.

For any kind of long-distance travel, A Better Route Planner (https://abetterrouteplanner.com/) is a game-changer. Doubly so if you're new to EVs.

Picking the truck up at the factory sure sounds like a fun this to do.

Saving the destination fee is an opportunity for Slate to differentiate itself. It is not required to be normalized - this is a marking falsehood. It is a decision by OEMs to add an additional price to the vehicle that is not included in the MSRP.

Under current Indiana law OEMs, with the exception of Tesla, are prevented from direct sales to consumers. The legislature is currently in session. I do not see any effort to change this law to allow Slate to make direct sales in Indiana.

I'm in northern Cincinnati. About 200 miles from Warsaw IN. Right on the edge of the projected limits. I'd love to pick 1 up and drive it straight home. Be like Kramer in Seinfeld. Maybe coast the last few miles ....

Depending on the extent of the delivery experience, it might be reasonable for them to charge the normal destination fee plus an extra delivery experience fee.

Either way, I'm not willing to work for free and I don't think they are either.

About 90 miles for me I might go for it.
I think it's inevitable that Slate will offer a factory pickup option. If not now, definitely in the future. From the media, we've learned there are definite plans to construct a "Customer Experience Center" at Warsaw, and this would be a great venue to take delivery. But don't expect to save on the freight and destination fees, that is already baked into the price of every vehicle sold by OEMs.
