Back in the day I also had a slide out removable AM/FM cassette deck. I think it was made by Audiovox. The one time I forgot to remove it, it was stolen overnight. The thieves broke the vent window to gain access. My fond memories in the borough of Queens!

I did that. As far as I can tell none of them are explicitly ruggedized to withstand extreme temperatures.

The motorcycle one purports to work in scorching heat, but even that doesn't mean it would be able to remain in a vehicle and withstand Arizona heat or (fill_in_the_blank) cold for years.
I have a Garmin XT2. Operating range is 5 deg. F - 131 deg. F

And this is where Slate is going to start losing people. “We didn’t include an infotainment so you can choose your own” the alternative solution? $800, and you need to install yourself, and it’s not integrated with your car. A couple instances like this and your cheap $20k ($27k) car is more expensive than a something off the lot, and it works worse

For $75 you can buy a CarPlay unit from Amazon that talks to your phone via Bluetooth. That’s pretty cheap.

I doubt I'll even use my phone most of the time.

Unfortunately I think navigation skills are dying with the years.
Location Services have never been enabled on my EDC phone, partly for this very reason.

I look up the destination, write down how to get there (if necessary), then drive.

I also have a 5-inch Garmin GPS (around $25 used) but use it rarely.

While driving, the heat shouldn't be too much of an issue, if the mount puts it in front of a vent. But yes, you'd have to remove it and at least put it somewhere shaded when parked.
The stock monochrome red display on my versa radio has gotten so it's unreadable when it's just warmed up. on a cool morning it looks fine, but after driving for a while or if the car is just hot, no more reading what station you are on or anything. The stock color screen on my mother's Trax she got used didn't last long, digitizer no longer works. $700 to replace with an aftermarket. That kind of thing is part of why I like the Slate idea.

Heck I still GPS my way too and from work every day, just to see traffic data and such.
Don’t lie, it’s so you can try to beat the arrival time 🤣🤣🤣

So the choice is to pay $xxx for a Slate installed system you may or may not like or use vs $0 to Slate and you pay for system of choice. Prefer making own choice.
