I still have questions. OK the handle is nice, but what's going on to the left and right?

Maybe the backup camera on the left? Lock mechanism on the right? Does the tailgate lock and unlock with the doors when the fob buttons are pressed? Is there a physical key as well as the fob?

In the handle makes it useless when the tailgate is down, and that also means to remove the tailgate will involve electrical connections-AKA failure points. Am I wrong? I do know this is the beta, I am waiting to see the detail on the production version.

A lot of the cameras are in the gate like that. Even on our suburban it's on the gate and if that's up, it's useless then too. Haha

I'm curious about the locking/unlocking with the fob. That would be nice but it does look like a point for key there too.

The higher the backup camera is mounted, the less likely it is to get covered with mud.

Besides, with a higher point of view, parking assistance software will have an easier time detecting obstacles. I am sure Slate is not working on this, but enthusiasts 100% will.

You must not have noticed where literally every other vehicle with a tailgate (lift or drop) on the road has the backup camera placed, nor considered why that might be. Power locks also means that there's already a 'failure point' electrical connection for the tailgate anyway.

My neighbor has a late-model F-150 and the tailgate has both a backup camera and a power lock. He installed a truck camper, which meant permanently removing the tailgate.

There were two quick-connect fittings under the truck (for the camera and lock) that had to be disconnected before removal. Ford actually provided two caps in the glove compartment that can be plugged into the fittings when the tailgate is off.

There are aftermarket camera kits for trucks with no tailgate. He mounted the new camera beneath the door of the camper, so it's above the bumper but lower than it would be on the tailgate. It just plugged into the same fitting as the tailgate camera.

I installed a slow open tailgate strut to my current daily a 2019 Ranger. Its a tiny mod but I enjoy the controlled opening of the tailgate. Anyhow I'd add a similar device to my Slate in a heart beat. Either factory or aftermarket.

my tundra has the camera in the tailgate. If it was in the bumper I would think the tailgate would block it when it was down anyway.
