I think they looked at reduced range when towing, then set the target at 1000 pounds, and designed everything for that limit. They could have put more weight into the chassis, heavier suspension, etc to get to 2k towing or higher, but then range without towing would go down some, and towing range might be 50 miles or less.
Imagine, 1,400lbs payload in the bed, 1,000 on the hitch, 200hp, 52.7kwh and a dream to make it 30 miles down the road 🤣🤣

The weight matters very little. All about the aero.

Unless you are at the physical limits of the drivetrain. You will end up burning excess energy accelerating, and pulling up a hill, and regenerative braking isn't going to be enough so you use brake pads more and don't get as much energy back.
I think at the rated limits you will do a lot better than 30 miles, but the discussion was getting into why those limits are what they are. Aero drag is going to be the biggest impact towing, but even if someone upgraded the suspension and reinforced the frame/body, you are going to rapidly run into overloading the drivetrain and batteries.

I never had a problem with my 1987 140-horse Ranger STX V6.

I loved that Ranger 4 cylinder engine. Gutless, but normally aspirated and it lasted forever. I used to get 30 MPG with a manual, because it had overdrive and would lug along at 1500-2000 RPM on the interstate in 5th gear.

For me, the ONE THING that will probably prevent me from going through with my reservation is that I just found out it will tow and carry LESS weight than my compact Subaru car. If the Slate could at least match those specs, I could live with that relative to all its other advantages that I really like. Sorry, but tow & carry capacity is one area a compact TRUCK can not afford to be found inferior to a compact car.

what subaru? If it is old, the tow ratings for older cars were essentially made up
