My turn to chime in. First, I am NOT an early adoptor of anything but the second I heard about Slate they had my reservation money. I've been interested in EVs but priced out of everything. I don't buy into the American desire to have the biggest, fastest, buzzers, luxuries, more, more more idea just to show off to the neighbors. Give me just what i need. Doesn't even have to be a truck shape but I get that's what is popular now.
I love the scappy idea to start an auto company in the US against the establishment. The way Slate is doing it will work. Minimal startup investment (no paint works, one model, etc).
And DIY ! Great part is making it my own. Always wrenched on my cars, since I was a kid. Can't wait to have it in my driveway.

1. It’s focused on being a true economy car. Cheap to buy, cheap to own, DIY friendly. No subscription scams.
2. It’s environmentally friendly. Climate change is very real, very detrimental, totally preventable and it’s insane that I still have to defend that point to people pretty often.
3. It actually looks really good aesthetically. Not too retro or too contemporary. It’s appalling how many ass looking cars there are these days.
4. No tv built into the dash. (Leads into number 3)
5. Slate, as a company, feels very grounded. It doesn’t feel they are talking down to their customers. We can handle technical details. We can handle DIY and a little learning curve. It’s not promising the moon. It’s not selling a lifestyle. It’s not hyper-masculine. It’s just a cheery car.

I had not long before Slate made their announcement, spent a little time looking into what was available in electric trucks. I've wanted an EV, truck format would just make the occasional need to haul something that won't fit in a small car so much easier not having to order stuff and pay for delivery. Finding that pretty much everything available started around $70k killed that. Years ago I'd looked into EVs, and most were priced out of range, others were lease only and limited availability.
Pretty sure my search for electric trucks meant I got targeted with the ads and articles when Slate announced, took me a day or 2 to click through, then I put in my reservation.

It is the closest to what we want. If it had no, ac, no cruise, a bench seat, and maybe a long bed, i would really want iy.

Don’t want much in a truck do you.

To have a runabout/go to work vehicle I don't have to think too much about thanks to being basic and electric, but is still something interesting and not a Nissan Leaf or something. To not think about the fact I'm heat cycling an engine to go a mile down the road, or using gas just to go get groceries or run for parts. I like the idea of my gas cars to be more of an occasion when taken out. Plus being able to "fill up" at home sounds super nice.

To get something out of the truck I don't want to:
  1. Open the tailgate.
  2. Climb into the bed.
  3. Move the 5gal pail of oil to the back.
  4. Climb down.
  5. Lift pail.
Instead I would like to
  1. Lift pail
The bed rails of modern trucks are up to your armpits. You can't lift anything over the side anymore. A slate's bed rails will be around the belly button.

It typo.

In my HS days it was 1997. My first truck/car was an 1987 toyota pickup. 4 speed manual, tape deck, maual locks, maunual windows, no ac, bench seat. A slate is the closest to it I can buy new in the USA. A Slate has a seat for me and a seat for my passenger prince/my cat.

There is definitely something special about simplicity that I miss quite a lot. When I first bought a used car as a late teen that had power windows and locks, it was cool, and, yeah, it's so much easier to draw all the windows down when you want to. I do miss the intention behind it all, though, and the tactile sensations and physical feedback you get from the manual things. I really miss driving a stick. Manual transmission is long gone with EV especially, I suppose, and that's OK.

I guess I just want simple. Maybe I'm just "old man yells at clouds" at this point, I just want simple. So many things are overly complicated with technology built it and it drives me crazy... and I work in tech!

My go to vehicle to get parts to maintain my ICE vehicles. 😁

Seriously, I figure it costs up to $12 in gas just to go to the grocery and pharmacy and shopping.

Yeah I feel the visceral analog sensation of old cars emotionally gives them character, sort of a soul. Cars are getting too digital and its losing this. You see the same thing happening with photography, where image processing on phones is making photos lose something important. I think as mass market items continue to get more digital and soulless, there will always be a counter demand for analog alternatives. Most of the time, it means people buying old equipment, but I hope an automaker can really embrace the analog niche and be successful. I’m very curious to see how this thing drives., Unfortunately no matter how analog we crave cars to be overpopulation + ICE engines isnt very ethical to continue... Man I hope hydrogen takes off. 😔

Whatever we have to replace ICE doesn't have to be digitized slop. An 11" screen is a distraction from what the purpose of a vehicle is. It adds danger, while providing nothing by way of increased functionality. The data seems to support me in that belief too:
